Around me was everything, yet nothing

I was atop of what I could only assume was Solomon’s Temple; around me I could make out the streets below as well as the Dome of the Rock.

How is it that these sights seem so vague although I had seen them a thousand times?

The golden luster of the Dome of the Rock seemed greyed, and through the streets that once overflowed with people living out their daily lives, was a continuously flowing stream of shadows. Even the sun itself seemed as if it was shining through a black cloth.

I fall to my knees in a violent coughing fit.

The air is foul and humid like steam rising from a freshly slaughtered animal; the greyness grows thicker pending closer to black.

I can hear a faint sobbing voice rising from the stream of shadows.

I’ve lived here all my life, you will not be able to drive me from here!

    The voice immediately fades away.

More and more weak murmurs rise up from the blackened streets.

    Please don’t!

    Don’t touch my daughter!

    Why...

    God please help me...

    I won’t move!

I’ll die before I let you take everything from me...

My eyes widen as I come to reality

That’s right, my home is being taken from me...

I quickly look for a way off the roof and into the streets, but I am stopped by a voice that is both soft and shrill at the same time.

    Quite the ordeal isn’t it?

I turn to meet the speaker’s face...however there is no face to be seen, only a dark mask with no eye holes, and a seemingly wicked smile carved into it. Covering its body is an odd black cloak that seems to wisp off its body like steam. Whatever this thing is, it doesn’t seem human.

    Who are you?

You humans have made up many names for me, but in definition, I am the god that resides over this world

Then please help us! We have lived in Jerusalem all our lives! These foreigners have no right to drive us from it!

Why? There is nothing to be done here.

What are you talking about? What they are doing is wrong, of course there is something to be done!

Nope! This is natural; do you expect me, a god, to fiddle with the natural order I created just to save a single city?

    ...I have no response.

Peh! You humans are so cocky! You think just because you pray to me every day and give me offerings and sacrifices, I’ll bend over backward and forsake the dogmas I put in place?

    You can...bare to watch this?

Watch what? There is nothing particularly upsetting about a couple empty voices and fading shadows

I look off the roof and into the streets once more, and I see things exactly as described. There were no tears or gruesome scenes...only-

    Shadows and empty voices....

I can understand your surprise, this is the first time I’ve ever removed it for a human

    Removed it?

    Removed this world’s veneer

    ...

This is the true form of this world I created.

    What?

Allow me to reiterate, the color, beauty, and emotion you are used to, are a veneer generated through you and the rest of your races’ passive ignorance.

My eyes widen, what kind of dream is this? That a being claiming to be my god would tell me this?

Hey, hey, no need to get emotional, I didn’t show you all this to torture you; we’re in the middle of a business deal aren’t we?

    What are you talking about?!

A powerful sense of melancholy presses me down like a weight, and I began to tear up in pure confusion and frustration.

"Tch, you humans are so weak; so many emotions. You can’t even see the true form of this world without breaking down...are you truly the
