31 Days of Praise for Depression - Stephanie A. Mayberry

    what can praise do?

Have you given praise to the Lord today? Praise is an essential element in your walk with Christ. It connects us to Him, communicates who He is, what He has done, and what He can do. It is a powerful weapon against the enemy and has the power to break the chains of spiritual bondage and oppression. When you open your mouth and praise God, you are accomplishing several things:

You are inviting God’s presence. God inhabits the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3) so when you begin to praise, He dwells close to you. Praise also makes you more sensitive to His Spirit, His presence. As you praise God you raise up a throne for Him (2 Chronicles 5:13) and that is where He dwells. When you need a powerful move of God in your life, praise is where it starts.

You are honoring God. Praise allows you to dwell in God’s greatness and who He is. It is how Jesus said you should begin your prayers (Luke 11:2) so that you may glorify and honor God. He is worthy of all the praise. You should give God the glory and honor that is due Him (Psalm 29:2).

You are directing your focus to God. Praise shifts your focus from yourself to God and who He is. It shapes your thoughts and perceptions so as you lift up praises you come to know God for those qualities that you praise Him to possess, bringing into sharp focus the character of God. Regardless of what you may deal with in your life, God is always worthy of praise (Psalm 96:4).

You are removing fear, worry, negativity, complaining, and doubt. By thanking God for all He has done and filling your mouth and heart with praise, you don’t leave room for negativity (Philippians 4:6). Praise is the best weapon against a downcast spirit (Psalm 42:5) and the Bible says to thank Him for all He has done.

You are opening the door for God’s power to be displayed. If you want to see just how powerful praise is, just read Acts 16:25-26. Paul and Silas were in prison, chained and shackled, but they didn’t stop praising God. God heard their praise and He caused a great earthquake that shook the very foundations of the prison. The Bible says that immediately the doors were opened and their chains were broken. They were free. When you need an immediately, start praising God and see what happens.

You are causing the enemy to flee. Praise ushers in the presence of God and darkness cannot exist in His presence. Praise pushes back the darkness, quiets the enemy’s lies, and stops the attacks cold (2 Chronicles 20:22). Depression is driven by the enemy. He uses it to bring down, to oppress you, make you feel hopeless, and make you ineffective. When you praise you push the enemy back and send him running.

You are making a way for God’s blessings in your life. When we humble ourselves and come into the presence of God He will not hold back His blessings and goodness. Praise brings us into His Presence, making a way for His blessings to be bestowed upon us (Ephesians 1:3).
