Chapter One
Last night I dreamed again of drowning. I floated in dark waters, the only light a shimmering reflection far above my head. I sank slowly, almost languorously, wisps of hair drifting past my face, veiling my vision and then wafting away again. Though I knew myself to be sinking into the depths, the folds of my favorite lawn nightdress continued to discreetly cover my nakedness. The gown billowed softly, silently, but the hem remained chastely around my ankles.
For some reason I cannot fathom, I felt no fear,
