‘The Big Catch
FADE IN: A drone’s view filming slowly moving out of the estuary - past the beach then turning left - scanning down the coast, focusing in on Jack Tanner.
EXT. SUNSET BEACH – SURROUNDED WITH PALM TREES – EARLY AFTERNOON – HOUSE OF BROKEN LOVE intro by Great White plays...
JACK TANNER - Late 30’s, is walking along the beach past the swimmers and surfers until reaching ‘Little Hawaii’ the world class surf spot near the river mouth, wearing shades + board shorts. JT has the classic good looks of a well preserved surfer/sailor, with finely chiseled facial features and aqua blue eyes, sun bleached blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail.
TANYA and SOPHIA – Italians, both late 20’s, speaking English + their native tongue at times. The tall, slender, bronzed beauties are stylishly sunbathing topless (Now beginning to cover up) in front of two palms, JT is strolling up the beach – He’s smiling back at them as he purposely places his small blue backpack under one of the nearby palms.
JACK TANNER
So, how are you fine young ladies doing today? I’ve never had
the distinct pleasure of seeing you two here on this beach before.
SOPHIA
(Speaking with a detectable foreign accent)
Well . . . hello to you too! I’m Sophia and this is my best friend
and co-worker, Tanya.
The two sultry Italian babes are now sitting with their arms crossed before turning over onto their beach towels, now lying buns-up in the sand, some welcome shade cast by the palm trees is now reaching their beautifully tanned bodies, JT is mesmerized.
TANYA
As a matter of fact we just arrived here at this spot just a few
minutes before you came by and please, sit down and join us. So,
what’s your name and tell me, do you live here in Sunset Beach?
JACK TANNER
Well my name’s JT and can you see that forty-five foot tri hull
sailboat out there in the bay? Yeah that’s my lady and I do live
2
onboard most of the time, but I also have a few places to stay on
land when necessary, because I am part owner of a nice property
with my best friend Beth, down south near Black Sand Beach.
JT hears a fluttering sound as LIVINGSTON - (His loyal pet seagull) LANDS on the vacant chair next to him, frightening the girls. The two had bonded some months earlier when he removed a rusty fish hook from his beak. JT rubs the top of the seagull’s head in greeting him, as he temporarily lifts up his sunglasses.
Tanya starts asking him something but she’s momentarily hypnotized by his blue eyes then pauses for a few seconds - gazing into his beckoning soul while trying to remember what she was going to ask him next.
TANYA
(Speaking snidely)
Oh, well that sounds rather cozy . . . just you and Beth living
together in a romantic and charming little beach house.
JACK TANNER
No Tanya it’s not like that at all, you see Beth is my soul mate
and the absolute best female friend that I have, only without the
sex and I’m not bragging or anything, but I sailed the Trinity all
of the way down here from Santa Cruz seven years ago by my
lonesome, just hugging the coastline to dodge opportunist pirates.
SOPHIA
That sounds amazing, yet scary JT . . . you must be a brave man!
And by the way, what do the initials J & T stand for?
JACK TANNER
Jack Tanner and maybe someday I’ll write a bestselling novel but
the people around here just call me Salt Water Jack
and nice
tattoo lady! Does that barcode going across your lower back have
any special significance or secret hidden occult meaning?
TANYA
She lost a bet with me and nothing more . . . if I’d lost the bet I
now would have a tramp stamp on my back instead of her. So JT,
just what prompted you to sail the Trinity sailboat way down
here by yourself?
3
JACK TANNER
Well yes, but actually my old compadre Joel Cockburn finished
sailing on the last two day leg with me. I found him in port up at
San Juan Del Sur, when I pulled in for diesel plus supplies and to
get off the water for a spell, while hanging out with some locals.
SOPHIA
So JT, just where is this friend of yours named Cockburn
now?
JACK TANNER
Oh, he’s somewhere around here on the beach just mucking
around and looking for tail, so he’ll probably be by soon and I
almost forgot to tell you guys that I sailed Trinity to victory in
the San Francisco to Honolulu TRANSPAC yacht race and we
set a new world record for the fastest time ever recorded.
TANYA
JT, why do you keep calling your sailboat Trinity, is that because
you are a devoted Catholic like us or something?
JACK TANNER
Devout Catholic, no God no! Well you see my ex-wife and young
son came up with that name and I kind of liked it myself, doesn’t
it have a nice little ring to it?
SOPHIA
Yeah, it’s like from the Matrix and with derived biblical roots
as well . . . and if you ask me, I think it’s an excellent name
to give a sailboat or even a little girl.
Livingston is now showing off to the girls by spreading out his wings and is squawking annoyingly, as a white Frisbee CRASH LANDS in front of the girls, kicking up sand on their oily legs.
JT gets up to toss it back over to a group of people, playing Frisbee Golf
nearby on the beach...
TANYA
So, JT I want to hear more about this woman named Beth . . . she
must be one amazing woman.
4
JACK TANNER
Yes she is, and do you know that she always says there are only
two kinds of people in this world, so what would you guess those
to be Sophia?
SOPHIA
Hmm, let me see . . . I would say the two types are straight and
gay!
JACK TANNER
No, that’s not it but what a most provocative and somewhat
unusual answer . . . okay now it’s your turn Tanya.
TANYA
Oh, I don’t know JT . . . let’s see, how about Jews and non-Jews?
JACK TANNER
No, that’s not it either but it’s an excellent answer just the same,
the two kinds of people are: Those people who want to be left
alone and those who will not leave you alone.
TANYA
You know Beth must be a very wise person, JT. Where is she
now and I’m also curious, what does she do for a living?
JACK TANNER
Yeah, she has an old soul . . . she’s back in Santa Cruz, teaching
yoga and her classes are always full . . . and hey, can I put my
beers in your cooler, there’s nothing else worse than warm beer!
SOPHIA
Of course you can, and don’t be so shy . . . but yo matey, I know
Stanley Livingston here is your pet bird and all but if he craps all
over my new chair, you will be cleaning it up, capisce!
JT smiles in acknowledgement as he opens the cooler’s lid then places his remaining five Silver Bullets inside, and to his delight notices an assortment of Smirnoff Ice’s and Mojitos. He passes them each one as the hot babes light their
5
aromatic European cigarettes while they are curiously studying Livingston, just watching his quirky movements as JT is feeling the sexual energy flow between him and Tanya.
Love is the drug – by Roxy Music is playing in the background...
TANYA
So, you told us before that you had a son named Bryson, how old
is he now and tell me something JT, is he blessed with your good
looks as well?
JACK TANNER
He’s twenty and will be turning twenty-one in three months and
fortunately for him he favors me more than his mom . . . no I’m
only joking! He looks like most of the other young surfers just
hanging out there on the beach, back in Santa Cruz.
JT stops short as he notices a school of fish cutting in front of a wave face and in turn making themselves visible. He’s also watching a friend surfing on a big wave and points him out to the girls. JT next gets up to
