Bad Blood - Dr. Ira May

    CHAPTER 1

    ––––––––

Light from a full moon illuminated the front of Roosevelt High School as the shadows of two figures moved through the night. Fog slowly crept in and climbed the brick walls like a slithering snake. A young man, in his late teens, emerged from the darkness and shuffled through the leaves that were piled deep on the ground. He wrapped his hand with a cloth, approached the building and knocked out a window bane. Moon beams reflected off the young girl’s face that accompanied him.

Come on, follow me, he said as he reached in, turned the lock and raised the window.

Are you sure we should be doing this? she asked.

Why not?, said the young man as he climbed through the opening. Once inside, he turned and offered his hand to the girl. She took it and crawled through the window. As they started down the empty hallway, the sound of their steps echoed off the walls and reverberated down the corridor.

Is this where you go to school? she asked.

Used to, before they kicked me out.

    Bad boy, huh?

To the bone, he said as he grabbed her, pulled her close and kissed her passionately.

She pulled back. If we get caught, we’re going to be in so much trouble.

That’s what makes it exciting, don’t you think? he said kissing her again.

Maybe we should just do it in the car.

It will be a lot more fun if we do it in the gym on the wrestling mat. Come on. The door’s right down here, he said leading her by the hand.

As they started down the hallway, she stopped and pulled away. The look of fear filled her face.

    What’s wrong? he asked.

    Did you hear that?

    Hear what?

That noise. It sounded like...some kind of an animal.

I’m sure it’s nothing, he said.

    Maybe it is something.

Maybe it’s... some thing, he said raising his eyebrows and widening his eyes.

That’s not funny, she said pounding him on the chest."

Sorry. So, where was the noise coming from?

Down there, she said pointing down the hall.

Stay here. I’ll go check it out.

I’m not staying here by myself, she said cowering behind his back.

As the pair started down the corridor, he called out. Hello. Hello. Is anyone there? There was no reply as his voice echoed back to him. There’s nobody in here but us.

    Are you sure?

I’m sure, he said as he leaned down, ran his hand beneath her blouse and unhooked her bra.

You’re such a bad boy, she said as she tilted her head to one side and exposed her neck as he began kissing her.

You don’t know the half of it, he said as he suddenly bared his fangs and sank them into her carotid artery, splattering blood against the trophy case.

She screamed, but there was no one there to hear her.

    CHAPTER 2

    ––––––––

A glorious, amazingly beautiful seventeen-year-old young man awakened from his dream as a loud knock on his door brought him back to reality.

Wake up, Little Jake. It’s time for school.

He yawned, stretched and crawled out of bed. He looked into a mirror at his sculptured good looks and deep blue eyes. He brushed his long black hair back out of his face and he ran his fingers across his pale skin. A bloodstone ring with a dragon insignia adorned his hand. He stumbled over to his old rolltop desk, plopped down in a creaky chair, picked up a pen and began jotting down some notes in his journal. It happened again last night. I had another dream that I was a vampire. Every time I go to sleep, I dream about drinking blood. I think... there’s something wrong with me.

Jake, cried out a voice from the bottom of the stairs. I’m not going to tell you again. Get your ass down here. You’re going to be late for school. You can’t afford to screw up again.

    ***

A beat-up Cadillac pulled to a stop in front of Roosevelt High School. Jake Martin, sporting a three-day beard and greasy disheveled hair, turned toward his son. A half-smoked cigarette hung from Jake’s lips. Little Jake, try not to get kicked out of this school.

Jake Jr., wearing dark sunglasses, sat in the passenger seat dressed in black, Gothic-style clothing. He turned toward Jake and sneered. I wish you would stop calling me that. I hate that name. From now on, you can call me Jacob.

Well, I’m your father and I’ll damn well call you anything I please. Don’t give me any lip. I’m not in the mood.

What ever, said Jacob as he slid out of the car and slammed the door twice to get it to close.

I’ll be back at four to pick you up, he said as he leaned over and yelled out the passenger window.

    Don’t bother. I’ll walk.

It’s not my fault you lost your driver’s license. You shouldn’t have been such a dumb ass. You knew better than to paint Graffiti on the side of the mayors’ car.

Maybe, but it seemed like a good idea at the time, he replied as he turned and walked away. He took a stick of gum out of his pocket, removed the wrapper, stuck it in his mouth and threw the paper on the ground.

Jake put the car in gear and drove off down the street leaving behind a cloud of blue smoke.

As the bell rang, Jacob strolled through the front doors, up the steps to the second floor and stopped in front of the administration office. The windows of the office were brightly decorated with Halloween posters. He pushed the door open and walked inside. Sitting behind a desk, a secretary looked up at him and peered over the top of her glasses.

How may I help you? she asked.

My name’s Jacob Martin. I transferred here from Southside High.

She dug through a stack of manila folders piled high on her desk, opened one and studied the photograph inside.

Martin, Jake Martin. Is that correct?

Yeah, except I go by Jacob.

Okay, Jacob. Have a seat over there by the door and I’ll let principal Hanover know you’re here.

She got up and strode into the next room. Jacob could hear her as she talked to the principal.

This is the kid that principal Baxter called us about, she said handing him the folder. He said this one’s got some really bad blood. Thought I’d let you know so you’d be prepared.

Great way to start off a Monday. Send him in.

The secretary exited the office and walked over to Jacob. Principal Hanover will see you now.

Jacob rose from his chair and slowly ambled into the principal’s office.

Close the door behind you, said the principal as he moved his eyes up from the folder and stared at Jacob.

Jacob kicked the door shut with his foot and stood in front of the desk with both of his hands stuffed in the pockets of the long black coat.

    Have a seat, Jake.

It’s Jacob, he replied defiantly as he slid the chair back with his foot and plopped down.

You’ve got quite a reputation. He opened the manila folder, removed a sheet and read the list of infractions. "Let’s see, you had a ten-day suspension for the intent to distribute intoxicants on school property. Here’s another ten-day suspension for carrying a dangerous weapon and a two-week suspension for a
