Alexis Dare

Alexis Dare lives in a small Southern town. During her free time, Alexis loves to read and can often be found with a book (whether it be the paper or digital kind) in her hands. She can also play a mean game of Pool and enjoys playing it with her family. Alexis is a laid back kind of gal and can be content lounging in her pjs while spending time with her husband and children. Summer will find her splashing around in the pool and judging contests between her boys to see who does the best jump off the diving board. She loves having the summers off to be with her family. Forever fascinated by the paranormal, Alexis pens novels featuring werecreatures (love those Alphas!), vampires, ghosts, and more! Her first novel, Witchy Wolf, was just recently published in the box set, Fated Mates: The Alpha Shifter Boxed Set by Insatiable Reads, which hit the USA Today and NYT bestselling lists. This book is the first of a series about Chloe Jackson and her dealings with biker Gabriel Denton. So keep an eye out for the other books in the series and read them all, IF YOU DARE! ***

I gulped and tried to look away from the gaze he pinned me with. There was so much heat in the way he looked at me, I was surprised my clothes hadn’t melted off. It was the kind of look that said ‘you’re mine for the taking, you just don’t know it yet.’ I had a sudden urge to crawl across the table and climb into his lap. I grasped the edge of the table and shook my head to clear it. Those kinds of thoughts led to dangerous actions. Gabe was dangerous. I really needed to stay away from him. The problem was, deep down inside, I knew I really didn’t want to.

    I was in big trouble.

What can you tell me about this Mitch?

I brought my attention back to the conversation we were having before he’d run it off the rails with his loaded declaration.

Not much. Like I said, not very memorable. He has short, straight brown hair. His face is kind of plain with no mustache or beard. He’s thin but not in a skinny kind of way if you know what I mean.

    He shook his head.

    Clear it up for me.

    I paused to think.

You know…not skin and bones. Skinny but you could tell he had muscles, just not the bulging kind.

I eyed Gabe’s arms. Now those were the bulging kind. I wiggled in my seat. Whoa, girl. Stop thinking like that!

    Chapter One

My heart hammered in my chest, and it felt like it would burst out of my rib cage at any second. I ran faster, not daring to look behind me because it would only slow me down. Low growls and snarls grew louder with every slap of my feet on the concrete. I tripped and almost fell. Oh no. The stumble cost me dearly, and a huge weight slammed into my back, razor sharp pain exploding in my shoulder as I hit the ground.

I woke up screaming, sweat rolling down my face. Moisture drenched the bed sheets. The night nurse, her white hat sitting askew atop black curls, rushed through the door into my room. At least this time, she didn’t flip the lights on.

It’s okay, Chloe. She grabbed the water pitcher from the rolling table and poured some into one of the yellow plastic cups. Here, drink this.

I took the offered cup and struggled to breathe. The grayness crept up to the edge of my vision, the panic from the nightmare threatening to make me hyperventilate. Taking a sip of the cool water, I focused on taking slow, deep breaths.

Same nightmare? She fussed about me, fluffing my pillows and smoothing out the bedcovers.

    Yes.

I’d been in the hospital for three nights. The nightmare came every time I closed my eyes.

Well, it’s no wonder considering. You’ve soaked the bed sheets, dear. We’re going to have to change them. Have they found the animal that attacked you, yet?

    No.

The police had been called first after I’d been found lying on the ground in the park. Even though the doctors determined the attack had been by an animal of some kind, Detective Andrews, the original officer assigned to my case had continued to update me on the progress of the hunt. From the way the nurses grinned, I could tell they thought he was sweet on me. I tended to have that kind of effect on men. It served me well most of the time.

That’s a shame. You’d think they’d be able to find something as large as that.

    You’d think.

I lay back down, my signal to the nurse that I had calmed down enough for her to leave the room to get the sheets. It had become a nightly ritual. She returned with a stack of white linen and a fresh blanket.

She helped me from the bed to the nearby chair, and I gritted my teeth against the pain that flared across my back and shoulders. She bustled about, yanking the soiled sheets from the bed and replacing them with the clean linen.

Here you go, dear. She helped me back into bed, tucking the covers around me. Try to get some sleep. If you need anything, just buzz.

I just nodded, wincing as the movement pulled on my shoulder which caused a sharp stab of pain. Sleep had not been my friend since the attack. I had been partying at my favorite bar, Royal Lush. The night had dragged slowly on until I realized I wasn’t going to find a hunk with which to fuck away my sorrows.

Around midnight, I decided to head back across the park to my apartment. I’d taken the same shortcut night after night without any trouble. I certainly didn’t expect to be attacked by some large creature with glowing eyes and fangs. A shudder rippled through me.

It didn’t matter that the animal control officers insisted I made a mistake. It wasn’t possible for a wolf of that size to exist much less be in the town’s park. I know what I saw. I also knew they wouldn’t find it. How could you find something you weren’t looking for?

I grabbed the remote from the bedside table and turned on the tv. After the first night of screaming every time I closed my eyes, the hospital staff decided I needed to be in a room by myself. It sucked during the day when I didn’t even have a roommate to talk to, but at night, when I couldn’t sleep, it was great to be able to turn on the television and not have to worry about waking anybody up.

The doctor who had rounded this morning told me I’d likely go home tomorrow. The only reason I’d been kept this long was to ensure an infection didn’t take hold in the areas where I’d been scratched and bitten. Since they weren’t sure which type of animal had attacked me, they wanted to err on the side of caution. The decision surprised me, since I thought hospitals were all about kicking patients out as soon as possible.

I flipped through the channels until I found an old B movie. Tomorrow couldn’t come soon enough.

    Chapter Two

I stood on the sidewalk in my dirty jeans and borrowed shirt. The day nurse had wanted to call me a cab, but I told her no. She probably assumed I had called a friend, and who was I to tell her differently? My one and only friend was out of town at the moment, and the truth of the matter was, I never took cabs.

Why pay good money for a ride? If I couldn’t walk to where I needed to go, then I hitched. Yeah, I knew everyone thought hitching wasn’t safe, but that was actually the exception and not the rule. Most of the time, hitching was just as safe as anything else. It helped when you didn’t have any morals yelling at you about using your body to pay for the ride.

On the opposite sidewalk sat a shiny chrome Harley, which was being tended to by a guy hot enough to melt your panties off. Long, black hair kept me from getting a good look at his face, but his body had muscles that just wouldn’t quit. Bulging muscles but not the grotesque kind of bulging muscles you saw on body builders. These were the kind that filled out jeans in all of the right places and made t-shirts look as though they came
