CHAPTER 2
Your Mental Makeup
It’s time to develop an understanding of your mental makeup. You will examine how you use images in each of the five senses, and how your senses already impact your life. Then you can begin to use this sense model to help deepen your self-hypnotic relaxation trance.
The Mind Is Like a Computer
The workings of the mind still remain, to a large extent, a great mystery. The mind can be compared to a very complex computer in that it processes and stores information. It is influenced by many things, including your physical environment, mental state, and genetic makeup. And just as your physical DNA is different from anyone else’s, the makeup of your senses is also unique.
9781580627375_ps_0015_001DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid, which is present in almost every cell in your body. DNA produces a genetic blueprint, unique in each individual except identical twins, which determines physical makeup. You inherit your genetic code from your parents.
You process, store, and recall information through five senses: sight, hearing, feeling, taste, and smell. It is possible that you may produce excellent images in all five senses, but it is more likely that you have a different level of response in each of them. The following exercises will help you build a sensory model of your imagery, which is your natural ability to imagine in the five senses.
Take your time, and give yourself a moment after each question to evaluate your experience — you might never have considered questions like these before, and it is perfectly okay not to have answers for all of them. Also, try to determine how clear each of your images is. There could be no image at all, a fuzzy image, a moderate image, or a very clear image.
The Sense of Sight
You can do this exercise with your eyes open or closed, whichever works the best for you. As you read or hear each question, answer yes or no.
First take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Do this a couple more times. Now imagine a place that’s special to you. It can be indoors or outdoors, real or imaginary.
Can you see this special place in your mind? If you can see it, is it clear? Very clear? Fuzzy? Do you see it in brilliant color, normal color, faded color, or black and white? Can you see it as a moving picture, like watching a video? Can you rewind it and play it over again, or freeze one frame? Can you change the picture’s colors, seasons, or contents; can you dim or brighten it?
Now try to change your perspective. Can you look at your special place from a different location, zoom in for a close-up, step back for a broad view, look over it or under it? Can you see yourself in the picture? Can you change the picture and see yourself at a different age? Can you see the picture without your presence?
You may have been successful in answering yes to these visual questions, or you may not have been able to see any images in your mind at all. If this is the case, you may be nonvisual. Remember that the sense of sight is only one of five.
Effects of Color
Have you noticed how color affects your life? You may find that you are attracted to a certain color of clothing. See if there is a relationship between what you wear and your moods. It’s possible that certain colors may affect your moods positively or negatively.
Here is a list of how certain colors affect some people. How does it compare with your experience? It’s possible that you do not respond the same way.
• Blue: Calming, lowers blood pressure, decreases respiration
• Green: Mentally and physically relaxing, relieves anxiety and nervousness
• Red: Increases heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and brain waves
• Yellow: Energizes, improves memory, stimulates appetite
• Violet: Peaceful, relieves migraines
• Pink: Relaxes muscles, relieves tension
• Orange: Energizes, stimulates appetite and digestive system
• Black: Enhances self-confidence, power, and strength
Can You See Auras?
Can you see colors or energy lines around people? If so, you are actually seeing an energy field, called an aura, that each person projects. Some individuals project their auras a good distance from their bodies, while others only expand a small distance.
A few people do have the ability to see this energy. You may see colors, or you may see wavy lines instead. If you have the ability to see auras, you may be able to determine another person’s mood or health by the colors or lines you see.
9781580627375_ps_0017_001Here’s how to see your aura. Spread two fingers apart in a V position. Hold them up to the light and look through the V without focusing on either finger. You should see a wavy line similar to what you would see in an old pane of glass. That’s your aura.
The Sense of Hearing
Next you will measure your sense of hearing. Again, get comfortable, take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Can you imagine any sounds in your special place? Are there sounds of nature, such as birds singing, water running, wind blowing, or is there just the sound of silence? Can you hear sounds coming from different directions in your special place — from the left or the right, from above or below? Can you hear the sounds fading or getting stronger?
Relaxing or Emotional Sounds
Can you imagine a sound that relaxes you? Does listening to it help you feel calmer? Can you imagine a sound that gives you energy? Can you imagine happy or sad sounds?
Can you replay conversations or sounds from the past? Can you change them or turn the volume up or down? Do you hear your own voice in your head? Do you hear other voices in your head?
Music or Noise
Think of how sound influences your life. Do you seek out places with loud, energetic music, or do you search for peace and quiet? Can you imagine music in your head? Can you turn the volume up or down, slow the music or speed it up? Can you pick out different instruments or voices?
Do you have trouble holding a focus when you are surrounded by a lot of sound? Do loud sounds bother you? Can you zone out
so nothing bothers you?
Throughout history sound has been used to help induce trances. The powerful performance of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring,
which debuted in Paris in the early 1900s, caused concertgoers to riot in the streets. In the 1950s, it was feared that rock-and-roll music would corrupt the minds of teens.
Scottish bagpipers piped armies into battle, Aborigines played didgeri-doos, and Tibetan monks used gongs and cymbals. In America, Revolutionary War soldiers marched to the fife and drum, Native Americans used war chants, and even today, football teams leave locker rooms yelling and chanting to psyche themselves up for a game.
Mood Music
Many stores play music that has a light, airy tempo to get you in the mood to shop. Restaurants combine music with lighting to produce a comfortable, intimate atmosphere for their patrons. In the same way, you may find yourself listening to certain radio stations, tapes, or CDs to create a specific mood while driving.
If you drive to work, try listening to upbeat music like rock-and-roll. When you arrive, you will be full of energy, psyched up for the workday. When you drive home, find softer and gentler music to listen to — you will arrive relaxed and ready for a quiet evening.
The Sense of Touch
The kinesthetic, or feeling, sense is experienced in two different ways. Your tactile sense represents physical feelings, which you may experience both internally and externally. Your kinesthetic sense also has an emotional component. Emotional images are often linked strongly to all the senses. To continue the exercise, answer the following questions and explore your sense of touch.
Can you imagine feeling the temperature in your special place? Is it hot, warm, cool, or cold? Is it dry or damp, windy or calm? Can you raise or lower the temperature? Can you feel the texture of things close to you: the ground, your clothes, or other objects? Can you hold or touch an object and feel its history? Can you picture its past?
Do you feel emotions in your special place? Can you relax there, get energized, let your worries go, or feel the creative flow of the universe?
Emotions
Do you hold emotional encounters inside long after the event has occurred? Do you pick up and hold on to others’ feelings? Do you have a sense of space around you, and do others intrude on it? Can you change your emotions?
Another type of feeling is intuition. It is the gut emotion that tells you something is wrong, or that something is right. Often people do not acknowledge their intuition; they try to cover it up. Have you ever said to yourself, I knew I should have . . .
but you didn’t.
The Sense of Taste
By now you may have discovered a connection between the senses: emotions may be experienced in colors, sounds, or sensations. There are still two more senses to evaluate. The next one is taste. Sit back, take a deep breath, exhale slowly, and experience the questions one at a time.
Do you have a favorite food? Can you imagine its taste? Can you change the taste, add a different seasoning, or cook it a different way? Can you blend the tastes of different foods on your plate?
Do you like to cook? Can you read a recipe and know what the result will taste like? Do you use recipes, or do you cook by feel?
Are there foods that comfort you? Are there foods that bring back memories, good or bad? Are there foods that you do not like? Do you dislike a food because of the taste, smell, feel, or appearance? Can you imagine a little bit of an unpleasant taste? If so, now remember a pleasant taste.
9781580627375_ps_0015_001In 1954, researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health developed a deep relaxation environment called a sensory deprivation tank. It was a floatation tank filled with a solution of Epsom salts that was five times denser than seawater, and it was completely soundproof. When floating inside, a person had a complete experience of her sense modalities, without interference from outside.
Many people love the comfort that certain foods provide. Chocolate is smooth and soothing. Tea provides a warm, comfortable feeling, both when you hold the cup and when you sip it. A crunchy food can help burn off stress. The emotions that accompany certain foods often cause a diet to fail; when you diet, you give up much more than calories.
The Sense of Smell
Last but not least of the five senses is the sense of smell. You can do the next exercise just like the others. Take a deep breath, exhale slowly, let your body relax, and contemplate the questions one at a time.
Can you imagine any smells in your special place? Is there more than one? Can you experience one smell and then another, or can you inhale a combination of smells at the same time? Can you imagine moving about in your special place, experiencing smells as you go?
Can you imagine a smell that relaxes you? Is there more than one? Do certain smells bring back memories? Do these smells help you remember sights, sounds, emotions, or tastes?
Emotional Smells
Are there smells that create feelings within you? Do they make you sad or happy, give you energy or make you tired? Are there smells that remind you of feeling ill or being healthy? If so, remember a healthy smell.
Fragrances impact our lives in many ways. Think about the smells you experience on a daily basis. You may visit a restaurant or bakery, pass by freshly cut grass, or get a whiff from a bouquet of flowers. You may wear a favorite perfume or cologne. You may have endured smells coming from a city dumpster or exhaust fumes on a busy street.
You might burn candles and incense or put fragrant oils in your bath. You may enjoy the aroma of fresh-brewed coffee, a wood fire, or spices and herbs. Do you have a favorite street, where each step you take brings different and enchanting smells to your nose?
Evaluation of the Senses
This exploration of the senses may have helped you create a hypnotic trance. Specific words will often trigger a memory, which for a brief moment replays itself in your mind. Words can evoke several of the senses.
Colors can be linked to feelings by using phrases such as hot pink,
cool blue,
pure white,
spicy yellow,
or peaceful green.
Foods are often experienced by all five senses. Taste may not be the only reason that you dislike a certain food: it might be the color, the feel, or the smell. Perhaps it reminds you of an unhappy memory, a place, or a person from that time.
The Importance of Sensory Imagery
It is very important to understand how your sense modalities function. In the upcoming chapters of this book, your sensory imagery will play a key role in hypnotic suggestion. It will be helpful for you to know both what you like and what you do not like: your positive and negative responses in each sense. This is a major component of Neuro-Linguistic
