Cody Beeler

My name is Cody Beeler. At a young age I wanted to travel. I would look through my parent's books and magazines for pictures of places around the world. Then I would dream of going there and having an adventure. I did not really get to travel until I got a job working on cruise ships. This job opened up a world to me that I had always wanted to see. For the next three years I traveled around the world working on various cruise ships. While working on ships I met a beautiful lady from Colombia. We got married and I packed my bags to move to Colombia. I traveled and lived in Colombia for almost two years. Now my wife and I are in the process of looking to see where our next adventure will take us.

    Cruise Companies

Cruise Ships have been around since 1844 and the demand only seems to be getting bigger with companies building more and more ships. There are basically two major players in the cruise ship industry: Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Carnival Corporation & plc. These two companies have the most ships and own several different other brands in the cruise industry.

Each of these two companies owns several cruise lines that make up much of the cruise ship industry.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. owns Royal Caribbean Cruise lines, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara Cruises, Pullmantur Cruises, and CDF Croisières de France.

Carnival Corporation & Plc owns AIDA Cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, P&O Cruises, P&O Cruises

Australia, Princess Cruises, and Seabourn Cruise Line.

These companies and brands are not all that are out there. There are still all kinds of smaller companies that have their niche in this market.

The good news is there is no shortage of jobs and places to apply. Cruise ships have a large turnover rate with people leaving and needing to be replaced. So the next step is to find a company you want to work for and apply.

    Applying

With so many cruise companies and jobs that you could do onboard, figuring out where to begin can be overwhelming. This section will be your guide through the process of figuring it all out and get you on your way to a job at sea.

    Where to begin?

To start your cruise ship journey you first need to look for a job that you can do on board. Cruise ships are adding more and more amenities to their vessels. This means there are countless jobs to choose from and more being added every day. So you should be able to find something to suit your current skill set. Start by looking through the Job Description section of this book for a job that is right for you. The list is by no means all the jobs that the cruise industry has to offer but it is a list of some of the more common jobs you will find on most ships. If you still cannot find anything that matches your skills exactly there is no need to worry. Cruise ships hire and train people all the time. If you think you can do something even though you do not meet all the requirements then apply anyway.

    Crewmember Hierarchy

There is a ranking system on most ships that seems similar to the military. Everyone working on the ship will have stripes. No matter if you never see them on your uniform or not. The more stripes you have the more privileges and things you can do on board. For example, the captain typically has the most stripes onboard and can do the most things on board.

Ships will normally sort workers into different categories like officers, engineers, staff, and crew.

The hierarchy typically goes something like this with the officers and engineers being on top with the captain and his team that keep the vessel from sinking.

At the bottom of the hierarchy are people in positions like maintenance, cleaning, laundry, waiters, bartenders, and cooks. Some ships will label these positions as crew positions. People in these positions may not be allowed to enter passenger areas except only to work. They will also typically live on the lower decks of the ship. However, each position has its own hierarchy so the higher up you are the more privileges you get. So if you are the head bartender or a supervisor you will be higher up the chain and therefore get more privileges.

In between the officers/engineers and crew are the staff positions. These positions typically involve people who interact with the passengers regularly like guest relations, hotel department, entertainment staff, and most tech positions.

There are also several members of the cruise ship that do not work for the cruise line. They work for an outside company that the cruise line outsources. These jobs are normally the shops you see on board, the spa, hair salon, fitness center, photography, and medical staff. What jobs are outsourced will change with each cruise company. Most of the time these outsourced employees will have some of the same privileges as staff members.

Whatever job you are looking to apply for make
