    Chapter 1

Elizabeth picked at her cereal, not the kind of cereal you get out of a box, but real honest to goodness whole wheat breakfast cereal that she drenched in milk, with just a touch of honey. Of course, it had to be instant cereal, because she just didn’t have enough time in the morning to fix it herself. If she skipped lunch, she’d be hungry by the time she got home. Elizabeth usually worked till six at Uptown Books, and more than forty hours a week, because she needed the money. Rent was high in town, even for her studio apartment, and even though her parents helped out some, she still had difficulty paying
