Refused support by the Joint Forces, Magnum planned a summit on the eve of spring at the JCU in Chicago to hatch a plan without scaling his efforts to an outright war. In the meantime, Fortune sent her own insurance, Caleb, to stall another catastrophe. Paris, she could rebuild, but thanks to Magnum's vocal exploits, Pinnacle will have all the opportunity in the world to bring the city down on top of him.

    Magnum’s Ultimatum

    Joint Forces Senate, North America

Magnum saw no need to stand on the ground. Walking was beneath him. He preferred to let others grovel at his feet while he flew in majestic fashion, his cloak trailing behind him. Magnum’s body was perfect in every way, rich in stamina, resilient beyond comparison. His jaw jutted with chiseled prowess, and his hair, he kept finely trimmed for each occasion.

They used to call him Inheritance, a secret he’d buried save for but a few in the world and most of them would die soon, all except the immortal witch, Fortune. Who could respect, let alone fear, a meek shriveled child with a name like Jenkins? Magnum cursed under his breath. His human name, a last living reminder that he, like all those heroes who came before him, would someday grow old and die.

Magnanimous hadn’t tried to stave off death’s embrace. Magnum recalled the final expression on the man’s face, a smile before it took him. Foolish beyond imagination. He could have lived, but he chose not to, in spite of the many opportunities afforded him. Magnum didn’t claim to understand the methods of his former master, but he did accept his charge, to spread the legacy of the greatest Metallomancer the world had ever known.

Magnum tightened his metal fist, feeling the presence of an arm he no longer owned. He breathed metal and the force of his resonance never tired. He could lift tons upon tons of metal if he chose, so long as the metal type could be traced back to a coined currency. He was working on incorporating titanium into a standard currency option within the USA, a little pet project to see if he could artificially increase his stockpile of Metallomancy connections.

Magnum burst into the Joint Forces Senate, a collection of representatives from the farthest reaches of the world, all gathered in one place to discuss the future of resonance. Men in suits gazed upon him with awe as he flew down rows of circular seats in the auditorium. He eased himself down, and his cloak draped thinly across the empty floor in the center of the domed theatre. Magnum peered around, watching their faces as he prepared himself for what came next.

Leaders of the new world, he began. You have failed your citizens. Pinnacle is winning this tug of war, and fear dominates the landscape across whole nations. First Paris and now this wretched serpent has snaked its way into the heart of my kingdom. Mark my words, I will not allow it.

Magnum paused and reflected on his words. He eyed the Senate carefully and watched for the Senate Speaker to make her move. He closed his eyes as chatter erupted and slander swayed across the crowds of onlookers. Humanity was not happy, but their lot were remarkably attuned to acceptance of futility.

The United States is not your kingdom, Magnum, the Speaker said, hushing the crowds. Caliber may hold sway at times of conflict, but you don’t own this nation.

A trivial matter, Magnum replied. Regardless of your opinion, this country is mine to protect, and I will see to it with or without the help of the Joint Forces.

You can’t start a war on our soil, even if you’re fighting Pinnacle. The Joint Forces won’t allow your actions to go unpunished.

Magnum snorted and folded his arms. Don’t take me for a fool. War is not my agenda, not without the JF’s consent. I’ve come here to ask for just that.

You want the Joint Forces’ permission to launch a strike on Pinnacle?

Magnum smiled and rose into the air, outstretching his arms in a wide welcoming gesture.

"You’ve all seen what Pinnacle can
