About this ebook

A casserole is a cook’s dream, a go-to, a crowd-pleaser. With the busy lifestyles of today and the concerns about nutrition, casseroles have become a way of providing healthy dishes with little effort and few ingredients.

Casseroles are budget-friendly, too. A little imagination, a little bit of this and that combined in an oven-proof dish, and a meal is on its way to the table. This book provides you with an array
of recipes to broaden your table’s fare - from a casserole fit for a king to one a child can prepare on a special day, you’ll find them here.

What’s more - they are nutritious and inexpensive. While a few of these recipes may require an ingredient you don’t use often, most of them are ordinary things you would have in your pantry or freezer. Some require a little extra time or effort to prepare and cook, but we’ve included them so you can bring “something different” to the table when entertaining or attending a potluck. You’ll be the hit of the gathering, no matter which recipe you select.

Cooks depend on casseroles for their convenience in busy times and their economic impact on a grocery budget, and they come in handy when a dish is needed to take to a friend or new neighbor. We absolutely couldn’t do without the casserole for family gatherings or club outings.

Life without a casserole is almost unimaginable. Learning to make a good one is a life skill, some cooks say, knowing how to do it will always serve you well. Get started with these recipes.

    Introduction

Casserole comes from the French word saucepan. It refers both to the cooking vessel, such as a casserole dish, and to the finished product after cooking. In the British form of English, a casserole is sometimes called a bake, referencing the method of cooking it. In some cultures, a casserole is known as a baked stew or cobbler. Regardless of its name, a casserole has become a food item all over the world.

There are as many types of casseroles as there are combinations of tasty ingredients. Ragout, cassoulet, tagine, lasagna, gratin and moussaka are just a few of the terms used to describe what we simply call a casserole; they, by any name, have a lot in common. They usually consist of a main ingredient, such as chicken, tuna, or beef which is surrounded by and complimented with items that go with that main
