    The artist Marcel Duchamp drew, in 1927, a curious door –actually it became a door to Duchamp’s studio at 11 rue Larrey in Paris– : a double door sharing one hinge, that would admit a person to one of two thresholds, but only one per admittance, so when it swings on its hinge and opens into one space, it closes the entrance to the other.
    Note the simplicity of his image but the complexity of his concept. The concept involved is the “Threshold Experience”, and the image is the ‘double doorway’ through which we enter and exit the spaces of our daily life. We can choose to enter a certain space or the other, and live our real experience, yet, at the same time we can see the other path –the one we’ve not chosen..
    There is a DOUBLE DOOR, which is an open threshold. Cross it and be welcomed to the other side.
    There is a double door, which admits only one traveler at a time. Your companions up to now must remain behind. The next step you take ALONE.
    There is a double door, it swings twice: once to immersion in the Psyche, once to release onto the World. Make your choice.
    There is a double door, on which it is written: 'ABANDON HOPE ALL YOU WHO ENTER HERE'. Will you boldly go forth, or will you boldly turn back?
    There is a double door: You two, standing apart, each in his/her own solitude.
    Make a friendship happen, then lift the door off its hinges. You can do it together.
    Throw it aside, it was just another prison door to crash through.
    There is a DOUBLE DOOR. Make of it what you will...

"Florence, A Walk With A View" is an excellent example of this type of poem. It exchanges the anger we experienced in the preceding poem with melancholy, but this is a haunted and desperate melancholy, not at all like the word's root meaning of sweet sorrow. Yet, in Fabrizio Frosini's poem, the city charms the visitor with its natural beauty - "the silky lights of the / Sunset" - and artistic ambiance - "the intimate warmth of nostalgia that makes / Your heart melt at the sight around".In the finest poetry, beauty is conveyed in all of it sensuous and spiritual glory. The title "Water Music" refers to one of Handel's most popular works, a masterpiece of baroque melody, rhythm and harmony. The poem, however, is not about this music.. here is a shining element of the beauty this poem conveys - "I was in my room, staring at the clear sky through the window. The moon, so pale and magical, drawing my imagination to her. In my ears Handel's music was playing softly." - There is the beauty of VITA NOVA, in this Frosini's poem: Dante's idealization of Beatrice with its artistic and moral benefits experienced by a contemporary couple. And finally the beauty of sublimation, when an otherwise sensuous experience must be transferred to the plane of the Imagination. Other Frosini's poem, like "Nocturnal Snowing", are Poems of Memory, that reveal the persistence of an experience of mutual attraction in the poet's life over many decades. There, a young woman, who is forever young and lovely in the poet's mind, becomes a touchstone of emotional value. But not all good experiences are given a future by the hand of fate.       In June 2015, back from a week spent in North Wisconsin, my dear friend Daniel replied to an email I had previously sent him, regarding the Introduction he was writing for my book "The Chinese Gardens".

      In his answer, he told me that during those days spent in the Nature, he had come to the conclusion that the 4th part of his Introduction, namely 'A Double Door', had to be part of another project, different from the Anthology books we had previously published. Thus he proposed to write a book together – only the two of us – based on the double door concept.

      His suggestion has now become the book your are reading, and you can find that concept explained in details by Daniel himself, a few lines below. Enjoy.

      There is a boundlessness in poetry which those of us who love it, pursue it, make it our daily companion readily grasp. And we do not have to descend for long into the Interior World to verify this untrammeled freedom is one of poetry's shining qualities. In fact, we may not descend at all into the Psyche, but rather intuit poetry's radical freedom. while standing in the clear light of daytime reality. Poetic intuition can penetrate any screen raised to block its piercing insight. And what will always be revealed are the wide spaces in which poetic imagination can freely wander in its own sweet way.

      A DOUBLE DOOR OPENS

      Marcel Duchamp made a curious painting of a double door that would admit a person to one of two thresholds, but only one per admittance. I like the simplicity of his image but the complexity of his concept. The concept involved is the Threshold Experience, and the image is the doorway through which we enter and exit the spaces of our daily life. And we do so repeatedly without thinking beyond our goal of getting from Point ‘A’ to Point ‘B’. But as soon as we add the concept of Threshold, we deepen the experience, and pause to reflect on its larger implications.

      The writer William Segal writes, "To view one's life as a series of thresholds instills a creative attitude to the living process. One's existence unfolds infinite possibilities. In Segal's infinite possibilities I sense a connection to the boundlessness of poetry. And Heather Williams goes even further by employing the poetic technique of metaphor: I not only walk through the threshold: I am the threshold." Both writers are commenting on the initial step, but Duchamp's image takes us further. We take one more step, perhaps two or three; we clear the threshold and enter a new space, but only one of the two choices.

      Fabrizio Frosini and I see in this experience an insight into our poetry, and the poems we have chosen to publish here illustrate that insight. There is a Double Door, one panel leads within to the Psyche, and the other without to the World.

      Sometimes we choose the panel that takes us inward or outward; other times the poem itself makes the choice. The dynamics of choice are often veiled, and we may or may not want to lift that veil. Doing so would be a turning back, and once we have entered a given World, either the inner or outer, the poem in progress or completed will urge us forward. There are adventures to pursue and discoveries to be made.

      Below are two examples of each choice and a brief critical comment:
