Chasing Shadows - Sophia Barron
CHAPTER ONE
Ding!
Delilah glanced up from her papers at the sound of the bell. The door swung wide open, but she couldn’t make out just who was standing in the doorway. Then Joe sauntered in, and made a slow circle around the main area of her store casually examining the herbs and incense, raking his fingers gently through the bin of semi-precious stones. Despite his detached demeanor, she wasn't fooled. He wanted something, or was looking for something specific.
That man hadn't ever set foot in her store before. That lack felt distinctly odd considering how small Espen was. Northwoods Minnesota or not, even tourist season didn’t bring that many strangers to her store. It generally brought most of the locals though. Except Joe. Until now.
The weight of his gaze as he wandered through the aisles, touching a bit of lace here, a bauble of glass waiting to be spelled there sent heat coursing through her. His intense ‘ignoring you’ act convinced her he had a reason to be here, but he didn’t seem the type to show his hand early It took effort, but she managed to pour her attention back into the accounts she was working on. For a moment she felt the weight of that dark gaze grow heavier. The front bell sounded again and the shadow of Joe's regard lifted
Delilah grinned when she saw her latest customers. Aria damn near danced through the door, her kiddos following close behind. It wasn't often that the Guardian brought her kids to Del's store, but Del kept a stash of chocolate kisses beneath the counter just in case. By the time Faith had raced up to the counter, Del had the bowl out and strategically placed for maximum viewing from child height.
The light that danced in Faith’s and Ian's eyes warmed Delilah's heart. Made her wish things had worked out with Sam all those years ago. Still, playing Auntie was a fine gig, too. She shoved aside the pang of desire for 'her own little witch-ling' and waited patiently for the children to speak.
Normally they browsed a bit before making a beeline for the check out so whatever they wanted, it must be important. Aria's bright eyes and small grin suggested Delilah was going to either love or hate whatever came next.
I want to hire you.
Faith's little face lost its grin and settled into a serious miniature of her mother's business face. Even the greedy light the candy had inspired was doused.
Del's heart thudded in her chest. If Faith needed magic Del wasn't so sure she wanted to be on the crafting side of that business. The kid had more power in her little toe than Delilah would ever have in her entire life. Different sure, but more.
Hire me for what, cub-ling?
It took all Delilah's nerves to suppress the squeak that wanted to escape with that all-too calm question. She ignored the quiet snort in the background, but part of her wanted to yell at Joe. She’d bet dollars to doughnuts if the kid asked him for magic he’d be rattled.
Magic.
The girl's blue eyes narrowed, and her little mouth pursed in a sort of half frown. Everything about that adorable expression said the kid was holding back some very questionable things to be calling an adult, especially one you wanted to employ.
Magic? What's wrong with your magic?
Del could sense Joe gliding closer, listening. His intense attention only added to her nerves.
It's too big for what I want to do.
Faith sighed, and that business-face drooped until tears threatened to fall. Not even Delilah was immune to that watery, brilliant blue gaze.
Too big? So you're wanting small magic, house hold magic then?
A furtive movement over by the talismans aisle drew Del's gaze away from the girl for a moment. Her eyes met Joe's dark, brooding gaze and her stomach flipped. His brows were drawn low over those intense eyes, and a slight shake of his head when he recognized her attention was fully on him sent butterflies racing through Del's stomach. If she didn't know better, she'd think the ageless brujo thought Faith’s request was dangerous.
"No,
