While an English major at college, I wrote a column which was published weekly. I have been writing ever since. The old West and Los Angeles in the forties are eras which lend themselves to tales of romance, courage, and fast paced adventure. I particularly enjoy writing stories about the mail order brides who fearlessly took a chance and traveled West, hoping to find love and a better future. Many of the locales that I write about are places that I have either traveled through or actually lived in. I try to make my works richly accurate. My desire is to provide you with an entertaining and fun read. When I'm not writing, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children.

Mail Order Bride - Kenneth Markson

To my wife and children, always.

    Chapter 1

Amy Loughran walked back to the small, cramped space which she had shared, until recently, with her father on the second floor of an old wooden shack in Omaha's Burnt District.  Her father had died and been laid to rest last week.  Tim Loughran was a gambler, and his lucky streak had gone cold during the past few months.

Amy started to go up the stairs of the rundown building, when several men emerged from the shadows.  It was obvious that they had been waiting for her.  Looks like trouble, Amy thought to herself, as she turned and tried to go back down to the street.

A tall, muscular man stood at the bottom blocking her escape.  His cold blue eyes stared at her, as his face broke into a sinister smile.  They've got me cornered, Amy reflected.

What do you want? she asked.

The tall man's smile grew larger.  There was something about that grin which made Amy's blood run cold.  He did not answer her question.

No need to get frightened tonight, honey, the tall man said in a gruff voice, as he approached.  I'm just here to pay my respects, and get acquainted.

Amy could see his hard face clearly now, scars and all.

You're Tim Loughran's daughter, aren't you? the tall man asked.

Yes, Amy replied.  What of it?

Sorry to hear of his death, the tall man said.

This man never felt sorry for anyone, Amy thought to herself.  She waited for the purpose of the visit.

Know who I am? the tall man asked.

He had moved up close to her.  Amy smelled his foul breath which stank of cheap cigars and liquor.

    Yes, she replied.  I know.

His powerful arm gripped her hand like a vice.

Then you know, he said, squeezing her tightly, I'm not the type of man who lets a debt go unpaid.

His strong grip was crushing her hand, and by the look on his face, he seemed to be enjoying it.

Please stop, Amy said, her face grimacing in pain, you're hurting me.

I didn't mean to, he chuckled, at least not tonight anyways.

His frightening eyes glared at her, as he loosened his grip.

Your dead father owed me one thousand dollars in gambling debt, he continued, "and I always get my money one way or
