I’m afraid it was a wild-goose chase, your Excellency,
said the young man, twisting the soft cloth cap in his hand.
He stood slumped before his employer, not daring to look the man in the eye.
What do you mean, Hamish? We have a sworn statement that the hourglass is with the Master Locksmith. Did you meet the man?
Aye, sir, I did meet with him, but he said he had no idea what I was talking about.
Hamish continued to look down as he spoke.
His reaction seemed natural, and as such, I believed him. His face was that of a puzzled man. I tried to question him asking if he’d heard of anyone else possessing the object.
And?
No, he had no knowledge whatsoever about an hourglass.
Did you mention the reward to him?
That I did, your Excellency. He was told that any information leading to the recovery of the hourglass would be rewarded. The man who delivers it to you will have the greatest recompense.
Yes, well,
said Hamish’s employer in an absent-minded way. He was already thinking of the next measures to take.
He snapped his attention back to the lad in front of him, That will be all. Thank you, young man.
He flipped a silver coin to Hamish, who caught it and then bowed.
