About this ebook
Everything You Need to Know about How to Use One of Today's Most Powerful Philosophies!
"We go in search of that which we already possess, but are not using." So says Ernest Holmes, author of THE SCIENCE OF MIND and founder of the philosophy of Religious Science. God is not far away, but is within ourselves, other people, and everywhere present. Why then, do we fall prey to unwanted conditions - illness, financial lack, relationship difficulties, loneliness and problems of every kind? Written as a manual for the practical applications of the principles set forth in The Science of Mind, this book takes the original philosophy of "change your thinking, change your life," and explains a clear and definite scientific method of prayer that can help you overcome life's obstacles.

Ernest Holmes (1887- 1960) was an influential member of the New Thought movement and in 1927 he founded what would later come to be called The Centers for Spiritual Living. There are currently over 400 CSL churches throughout America.

FOREWORD
IT’S WITH A GREAT GRATITUDE THAT I WRITE THIS FOREWORD to How to Use The Science of Mind. It gives me an opportunity to repay, just slightly, the huge debt I owe to Dr. Holmes and his teachings. I can honestly say I divide my life in terms of Before Science of Mind
and After Science of Mind.
This sounds corny, but it’s true. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve had a great life. I grew up in a great small town and had a happy, relatively conventional childhood. I was outgoing and curious. I had opportunities to work and make extra money for all the things kids think they need. I had a great family and friends, and I felt connected with what I called God. However, I didn’t go to church anymore because the God they preached just didn’t match the God I knew. I also felt powerless to escape my life trajectory. Based on the cultural environment, I was destined to marry someone in the logging industry, stay home, have kids, and perhaps add income to the family as a clerk or in some other womanly
profession. (My father, in all his paternal loving wisdom, wanted me to work for a government agency because it would offer the most security.)
My heart and soul, however, wanted none of the above. Then a friend introduced me to the works of Ernest Holmes and his textbook, The Science of Mind. That was the beginning of my new life. It didn’t happen overnight, of course. In all honesty, for the longest time I just didn’t get
the guy, the ideas were so foreign to my mental constructs. But as I let the wisdom speak deep to my soul, my soul responded with yea and Amen
(the head, or intellect is often the last to catch on).
So, After Science of Mind, I gave myself permission to look at jobs and careers that none of my peers were considering. I started to believe I could be successful—even very successful—financially; I let myself consider the vast fields of infinite possibilities. That was new. Then I used the techniques taught in this book to live those possibilities. I’m living a life I would have never considered possible Before Science of Mind. Now, I frequently ask myself, what’ next?
So, dear reader, I can say with all conviction, this book could change your life (you’ve read that before I’m sure). The catch is you need to apply what you read. Don’t wait to thoroughly understand Dr. Holmes’ ideas of how it works, just start working it. Understanding will follow: in the meantime, you could be living the life of your dreams.

INTRODUCTION
THERE IS A POWER FOR GOOD IN THE UNIVERSE AVAILABLE to everyone and you can use it.
This book teaches you what this Power is, how it works, and how you can use it to help yourself and others. If you will accept the simplicity of its statements and follow the instruction given in the examples of how to use this Power, you will find yourself engaged in the greatest experiment of your life.
The human mind needs, and must have, a direct approach to Spirit. It is natural for us to reach out from our ignorance to Its enlightenment, from our weakness to Its strength, from our darkness to Its light. Somewhere along the line we shall have to surrender our weakness to Its strength, our fear to Its faith, our lack to Its abundance.
This book teaches you how to pray scientifically. It is applied Christianity.
Faith not only lays hold of a power which actually exists, it causes this power to respond as though it were a law of good operating for you. Why shouldn’t we have an unlimited faith in life? It has intelligence enough to make everything, including ourselves.
And now, because we need it so much, and because we feel we can no longer live without it, we are going to act as though it were right here, always responding to us, loving us in spite of our mistakes.
The disciples of Jesus watched him in his ministry among the sick and among the multitudes who heard him so gladly. They had seen new light come into the eyes of those whose vision had been dulled. They had seen a new energy flowing through the limbs of those who had been paralyzed. They had seen the lame walk, the dumb speak and the deaf hear. And so they asked him to teach them how to pray.
The pages of this book are devoted to an explanation of his answer.
— Ernest Holmes
Ernest Holmes produced many of his writings early in the twentieth century and, following conventions of that era, often used generic masculine forms in referring to both men and women. Rather than alter this book to reflect contemporary usage, Science of Mind Publishing has, in most cases, retained his original style.
INDIVIDUALIZING UNIVERSAL POWER
SPIRIT IS THE CREATIVE CAUSE BACK OF AND WITHIN EVERYTHING. God is not a spirit, but the Spirit. This one Spirit is the spirit of all people. A philosophy of unity permits many mentalities but only one Mind, innumerable individualized points in the creative consciousness of an Absolute which always remains one, undivided and indivisible unity.
It is because the Mind of God, which is the creative mind of the universe, flows through man that man’s thought is creative. It is because of man’s nature and not his will that his thought is creative. Who by taking thought—as though he were independent of the universal Mind to do anything—who by taking thought
can change his spiritual nature or add one cubit
to its stature?
Man has a mentality. He has a spirit in the sense that the Spirit is individualized through him, but this spirit is not separate from God, for God as man, in man, is man. Man is individual while God is universal. The Universal individualizes Itself in the individual. The highest God and the innermost God is one God.
This One includes man.
Man is an individualized center of Divine Thought and through him the Original Thinker is finding a fresh starting point for Its creative power. Therefore, without violating universal or natural laws, the mind of man steps in to specialize or make personal use of them.
Man, then, is given power over his own life. He cannot alter the laws of nature, but he can so alter his relationship to them that that which had bound him may now free him. He has been given the prerogative of spontaneous thinking. He has been given the ability to initiate a new chain of causation. He announces his own activity. This activity is an activity of the Divine Mind operating through him. It is the original creative Cause doing something new through him.
There is but one Mind and we use It. The laws of nature are universal. Our use of them is individual and personal. This is the secret of spiritual mind practice. Our thought is operated on by a universal creativity which is infinite in its capacity to accomplish. Thus, in taking thought we do not force anything, we merely decide what thought to follow, knowing that the result is automatic.
This idea of the oneness of God is not a philosophy of absorption or annihilism. We do not become absorbed in the universal Self to the loss of individuality. Quite the opposite. We find ourselves, not absorbed, but immersed, in a universality, each one being a unique, individual and different manifestation of that which itself is one, undivided, indivisible and whole,
We cannot think of the Spirit as static, but as forever unfolding Its divine nature. It is doing this in the physical universe independently of our personal thought. In our personal lives It must do this through our thinking. In such degree as our thinking is in accord with the original Nature, the same orderly procession of harmonious ideas will operate in our affairs that are already operating in that larger world which we experience but neither create nor control. This leaves us individual freedom within the law of universal harmony, individual will within a universal coordinating will.
As all deep spiritual thinkers have announced, and right, we soon come to realize that wherever the individual will is contrary to, or in opposition to, this universal coordinating will, it detaches itself from the source of its power, it goes alone and soon becomes exhausted. On the other hand, wherever the individual will links itself up with the universal harmony, it becomes a spontaneous proclamation of that harmony, now individualized.
In spiritual practice we follow the stream of the individual life back to the original Source from which it emerged and in which it still lives, moves and
