Rumors of bizarre scientific experiments on planet Bali draws Fortean, Inc. agent Lucia Alvarez to investigate. She's on a mission to crack the mystery behind Stavanger Corporation’s derelict research facility. But once there, she discovers an even greater danger—the man who once broke her heart.

Derek Pearson was everything Lucia wanted in a man—athletic, genuine, accomplished lover—until the day he inexplicably disappeared from her life. Unable to track him down, she threw herself into her work, desperate to forget she'd ever met him.

Now he's on Bali and no longer the man she once knew. Can they overcome their fractured bond to join forces and solve the mystery, or will Derek's dark secret tear them apart?

    Chapter One

On the bridge of the Strange Days, Lucia Alvarez studied planet Bali on the holographic display. The extensive ice caps made the planet's surface resemble a cracked egg shell with a slab of yolk protruding from the middle. The corners of her mouth turned downward. Hardly the stuff of exotic resorts. No, only ghosts resided on this uninhabited planet. Or so the general public thought. Lucia knew differently.

Bali hid a secret — a secret she'd spent the past five years attempting to expose.

The secret concerned an operation that was possibly fantastical in nature — and very likely illegal. After all, that's why Fortean Inc. had funded her expedition. Bizarre phenomena were the organization's specialty. As Earth's colonies grew in number throughout the Milky Way, so did reports of strange, unfathomable occurrences. Bali was the latest in a long line of such cases. As one of the company's top investigative agents, her job was to uncover the mystery, document it, and report on it. Fortean's marketing machine would take care of the rest.

In the words of Fortean's founder, Transparency is king. Fortean agents often tackled cases regular law enforcement wouldn't or couldn't touch. Some feared the organization because the general public had access to its archives. Vast amounts of wealth had been offered for its silence on any number of cases, to no avail.

Agents were motivated by a variety of factors — adventure, status, and access to unique technology. For her, it was more personal. Every life she saved was in memory of her parents. They'd perished long ago in a suspicious starship accident even Fortean, with all of its power and reach, hadn't yet been able to explain.

    The starship's owner: Stavanger Corporation.

Fortean had provided her with the resources to keep tabs on the behemoth company ever since she'd joined. Solving her parents' case was beyond her reach, but her current one might help her prevent future tragedies.

Once in orbit above Bali, she engaged stealth mode and set her shuttle's course for Minidoka Base. All evidence pointed to the dilapidated, supposedly abandoned facility as the locus of suspicious activity. She hoped to discover the final puzzle piece there.

Under normal circumstances, she'd be confronted by security forces who would demand pre-approved clearance — if they even allowed her ship into Bali's orbit. But Stavanger wasn't expecting any visitors now, especially not a lone agent. The corporation had made a very public show of Minidoka's closure, citing high costs and projects of little yield — almost too much of a show given the cultivated media coverage. Stavanger's nobody's home strategy even extended to a relocation of the corporate satellites.

That smoke-and-mirrors stunt, along with reports from her underground contacts, convinced Lucia they had to be hiding something huge.

Even before the base had closed, strange rumors about the research conducted here had begun to circulate. She had tracked down several former lower-level employees and learned about questionable scientific experiments. A cook had informed her that at one point, he had prepared packaged meals for an
