Gifts In Jars - Margaret Lowe

    1. Why Mixes in Jars?

Everyone loves thoughtful, homemade gifts. Recipe mixes in jars are delicious, easy, and inexpensive gift options, appropriate for any person and any occasion. AND they’re as fun to assemble and decorate as they are to receive and enjoy! Their popularity also makes them an easy way to earn extra income by selling the jars through fundraisers, kiosks, craft shows, or word-of-mouth or even starting a home-based online business.

Recipes and mixes packaged in a beautifully-decorated jar present endless gift-giving opportunities. Does your child’s teacher love gingerbread cookies? Make her a mix and have your child decorate the jar—the teacher will love it! Has your father-in-law been on a chili-making spree recently? You’ll find a delicious chili recipe in this book that would be perfect for him! Does your co-worker complain about being stretched too thin during the holiday season? Present her with a jar of beautiful, handmade bath salts she can use to enjoy a relaxing, detoxifying soak in the tub. There is a perfect gift in a jar for everyone on your birthday, Christmas, or just-because gift list, and the recipient will be sure to appreciate the unique item created with love by you!

    2. Filling and Decorating Your Jars

Assembling and decorating your gift jars is really easy and, I think, really fun. Obviously, there are as many ways to decorate a jar as there are recipes to fill it, but here are some of my favorite tips.

    Types of Containers

I recommend using glass canning jars, which are easy to find and inexpensive (they’ll be in the canning section of your local grocery store). I also occasionally use reused condiment jars (like pickle jars), sauce jars (like spaghetti sauce jars), or glass soda bottles with the labels removed. Obviously, be sure to wash out the jar before filling it, even if it’s a brand-new mason jar.

When filling, note the following amount of mix per size of jar:

Quart canning jar – about 4 cups

Pint canning jar – about 2 cups

Half pint canning jar – about 1 cup

Pickle jar – about 3 cups

Sauce jar – about 3 cups

Soda bottle (classic Coke bottle size) – about 1 cup

    Tips for Filling Your Jars

I use a large-mouthed funnel to fill my jars. When layering ingredients, I use the bottom of a narrow drinking glass to pack down each layer of ingredient before putting in the next layer. This will ensure that the layers don’t mix together once in the jar. I’ll note in each recipe whether the ingredients should be layered or mixed. For the recipes in which the ingredients should be mixed, simply combine the ingredients in a medium-sized bowl and then funnel the mixture into the jar. If you need to, pack down the mixture to make sure all of it fits inside the jar.

    Decorating

Your jars can be decorated as simply or as elaborately as you like. Supplies you may want to have on hand:

    Spray paint
