About this ebook

“You’re fired.”

Jason Walker blinked.

Nope, nothing changed. Not the dingy office with the out-of-date faux wood paneling, or the woman sitting across from him behind the old desk.

She was the only thing in this depressing room worth looking at.  Long, thick golden hair. Not blonde, not brown, but a burnished gold, almost like brass. She wore a plaid blue and white flannel work shirt. The sleeves rolled up to her elbows. When Jason started two weeks ago, stealing looks of the lovely Ms. Robin Avery had become a delicious pastime. With her quick wit and solid presence, she commanded attention when she walked around the site. He couldn’t help himself if she had been on his mind a little too much when he was alone and aching. Yes, she was a beautiful woman. One he always enjoyed seeing during his long, exhausting days...

    You’re fired.

One he always enjoyed seeing during his long, exhausting days.

    Except right now.

Right now, he scowled at those full lips that had been taking increasingly prominent residence in his fantasies.

Did she just say what he thought she said?

Um, sorry, what? His brilliant mind uttered through his mouth.

Her gray eyes narrowed. Weariness and annoyance colored them into hard stones. There was also a hint of sadness as if the thought in her head pained her.

Jason. I agreed to bring you on because Bobby practically begged me. I told you, especially with your inexperience, it probably wasn’t to go work out. But after that thing with the nail gun...

    ––––––––

Embarrassment and a bit of anger crawled up his spine, watching as she left the rest unsaid.

He got it. He messed up. After all, to her he was just another newbie.

Listen, I am sorry about the nail gun. He tried to convey his most contrite puppy dog look. It always got him whatever he wanted. No one could resist the baby blues.

Her eyes flashed. She leaned into the desk and clasped her calloused hands in front of her.

Safety is more important than anything else on this site. You could have killed or seriously injured yourself or someone else. This isn’t a joke, Jason. People die on sites. A shadow passed over her face and cleared in an instant. Her normally husky voice was clipped and firm.

Crap, he knew that voice. He had been hearing it all his life from his father.

You can’t fire me. He blurted out.

Her pretty face grew hard, those full lips curled into a thin, brittle smile. You think so Princess? Well, guess what? You are a liability. I can’t have someone on my crew who is going to do whatever he wants just because he doesn’t want to listen and learn.

Robin straightened back into her chair.

Melissa will have your pay.  Just leave your gear with her.

Well, hell, Jason thought as he numbly stood up and walked out of the office, it seems she could fire
