    Chapter One

Dyak trotted sharply towards the large, gridded area of road that he hoped formed the taxi rank. The street was empty, he could hear people talking in the distance, but the mist along with the closing darkness made it impossible to make out any more than their rough shape. A few minutes passed and Dyak began to hear something more than just a faint hum of conversation. It was a low, rhythmic thumping that was steadily increasing in volume; two thuds in repetition, one duller than the other.

Louder and louder, the strange beat continued until Dyak could feel the tarmac beneath him shaking in time to the tune. Dyak became hypnotised by it, trance-like and repetitive as it was; suddenly, however, this spell was broken as the sound’s source became apparent. Catching full sight of it in the matt glow of a nearby street light, as it rounded the corner beside him, Dyak was hit by a wave of panic.

Its body was about the size of an average car, a black metallic dome which would have been reminiscent of a giant beetle if it wasn't for the human head projecting from its front, like a boil and the chair upon it’s back. Dyak stepped back in alarm, as after this grotesque had rounded the corner, it stared, smiled and headed straight for him. Standing twelve feet off of the ground it was a daunting figure, its three thin, cylindrical legs accounting for more than two thirds of its height.

As it galloped closer towards him, it would first rest upon its front two limbs, leaning forwards before flinging its single rear leg through the other two; then planting itself, a little precariously on this alone it would launch itself onwards. This maneuver was repeated and it continued upon its path. The insane behemoth came to a stop and knelt on the tarmac, its legs folding up under it, no more than a foot away from Dyak.

He reluctantly turned his head to meet the creature’s gaze and the creature did the same; for the beast, however, this entailed his human head rotating eerily towards him, turning ninety degrees in the steel collar that fixed it to its body.

A disconcertingly friendly smile was plastered across the creature’s face as it began to speak, Evening sir, where are you headed to?

Dyak breathed a sigh of relief; apparently, his taxi had arrived.

Terrible weather we've been having, absolutely terrible, the driver grumbled.

Dyak beamed, he was feeling much happier, The weather is truly awful. He said chirpily, the speedy arrival of his steed made him
