Ketogenic Diet - Joyce Smith
Introduction
A ketogenic diet, also known a slow carb high fat, is a low carb diet whereby the low level of carbs triggers the liver to produce ketones. The ketones are then used as energy. When you eat something high in carbs, your body breaks the food down to yield glucose and insulin. Glucose is easily converted into energy, thus your body is more likely to choose it as a source of energy over other sources. Insulin on the other hand is used to process that glucose and circulate it around the body.
In such cases, glucose is used as a primary source of energy and thus any fat eaten is stored in your body since the body does not need it. However, by reducing your carbs intake, your body goes into ketosis, a natural process which the body uses to ensure survival during a low food intake period. During ketosis, the body produces ketones, a product of fat breakdown.
The main objective of the ketogenic diet is to induce this metabolic state without starving your body of calories. Instead of starving your body of calories, this diet starves your body of carbohydrates. This diet is heavily dependent on the human body’s extremely adaptive quality. When you fail to give your body carbohydrates to produce glucose, it looks for another source of energy.
Ketogenic diet not only helps get rid of unwanted fat but also helps you gain muscle, strength, endurance, and speed.
