Book Abstract
In the 18th century, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay pseudonymously published (under the pen name Publius
) a series of eighty-five political essays which came to be called The Federalist Papers
. These essays defined and helped shape the public debate which eventually led to the adoption of the Constitution of the United States. The Federalist Papers also focused on what can be termed the original argument
– namely, what is the correct balance between the rights of each sovereign state and the federal government?
The central question of The Federalist Papers was: Can man govern himself? Critics suggested good government only ever arose from war or blind luck. The bedrock belief Publius put forward was individuals could peacefully choose to create and then be governed by a central government that was good and wise and therefore the Constitution of the United States should be ratified and enacted in order to make that process happen. The core principles which The Federalist Papers articulate are:
Smaller government makes for better government because it maximizes the liberty of each citizen.
