Tangerine
by Edward Bloor was first published in 1997. It is a highly successful young adult novel. It was the first published novel by the author. It is primarily a story about soccer and two different communities, but it surprised everyone because it won several literary awards.
The novel deals with some of the most powerful issues that include discrimination and bullying. Besides telling about the story about soccer, the book also tells about dysfunctional family life and apocalyptic natural disasters.
The novel was nominated for the Michigan Library Association Thumbs Up Award in 1998. In the year 2000, it was the winner of the South Carolina Book Award for Junior Book. In the following year, the novel was nominated for the Rebecca Caudill Young Reader’s Book Award.
Paul Fisher is the protagonist of the novel. Although he has bad eyes, he is not blind. He lives in an upper middle-class community where he is able to see through most things that happen around him. The neighbourhood is located in a sterile housing development in Tangerine County, Florida. It is called Lake Windsor Downs.
As the story begins, we learn that Paul and his family happen to have just moved to this place. The story is written in the form of journal entries. Through these journal entries the reader is able to see very closely that it is a divided community.
The people living in Lake Windsor are wealthy and they have very safe environment, but on the other side there is Tangerine. Hispanic and black working families live in Tangerine. The people living in Tangerine work as labourers in the orange grove. They serve the people living in Lake Windsor. Although they are very poor, they depend on each other’s loyalty and commitment and it is necessary for their survival.
Having moved to this new place, Paul begins to be close to the kids of Tangerine. They are rough but they are honest. Now Paul learns about lies and violence that is very much festering under the surface of his family and his community. He begins to see many things that were alien to him before coming to Tangerine.
Erik is Paul’s brother. He is in his senior year of school, and he is determined to become a football star. Erik is at the centre of the problems in Lake Windsor. His family and the other people in their community only see Erik’s bright side, almost being blind to his dark side. That dark side has a direct impact on the people living in Tangerine.
It is obvious that at the centre of the story there is class difference, power, refusal, and glory, but it is also a story of a place. It describes the unique County of Tangerine in great details. We learn about the lignite fires under that county. The lightning strikes are constant. The geography of the place is unique. The place teems with orange groves where orange trees are found in abundance. There is obvious difference and tension between the people who work in those orange groves and the people who don’t.
The critics and reviewers generally admired the writing skills of the writers, particularly because of the details that the author provides to create a kind of illustrious picture before the readers. The narrative is quite smooth and the story is quite absorbing. The element of interest continues to be maintained till the very end of the novel.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
Before the main story begins we learn about Paul Fisher and his brother Erik when they happen to be in kindergarten. One day, one of Erik’s friends calls Paul Eclipse Boy.
We also learn about Paul’s first day of kindergarten. Some fifth graders bully him by saying that he is legally blind. Paul’s brother Erik does not come forward to defend Paul and lets him to be bullied by the other students. This happens before the beginning of the novel.
As the story begins, Erik, Paul, and their parents leave Houston and move to Lake Windsor Downs in rural Tangerine, Florida. It is in Texas. Erik is Paul’s older brother. He is a football player and he hopes to get a football scholarship at the University of his choice.
We learn that Paul, Erik’s younger brother, is visually impaired. He is generally considered blind, but he plays soccer. His parents have a belief that a solar eclipse caused that visual injury to their son. Paul does not remember it.
Having unpacked their things in their new house, Paul begins to look around the place. He takes a tour of his new school. He is introduced to Mike Costello and his brother Joey.
One day, while playing football, lightning strikes and kills Mike Costello. Erik and
