    The

    Holy Spirit

John baptized with water, but in a few days you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4)

The disciples certainly are a good example for us to learn of our need for the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Firstly, they had been with Christ Himself, heard the best sermons, saw the greatest miracles and yet were told by Jesus, at the time prior to ascendance, to wait for the Holy Spirit. ‘‘Do not leave Jerusalem but wait for the gift my father promised’’, instructed Jesus (Acts 1:4).The Christian life we mentioned in the Spiritual life1 and the Spiritual work2,(books to which this one is a sequel)cannot be attained by extensive church attendance. Talking of church, I believe the disciples attended the best church the world over. What sermon could be better than the sermon on the mount? (Luke 4:14)What vision is better than the transfiguration? (Matthew 17:1)No wonder, Peter wrote, ‘‘For we did not follow cunningly devised  fables  when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.  And we heard this voice, which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain (2 Peter 1:16-18).But after  mountain climbing with Jesus, glorious visions and hot rebukes, Peter still needed the Holy Spirit. Not even spanking would have made Peter better. He needed the Holy Spirit. Why was it so?Jesus answers, ‘‘when the Holy Spirit comes upon you..you will be able to be my witnesses’’,(Acts 1:8).

Many are ministering without the Holy Spirit. They are caught up in preaching boring sermons and causing many to snore on a weekend. Many preach but there’s no conviction. They preach but there is no power. Their words are no better than an eloquent speech from the minister of foreign affairs. This we learn from our Lord is a tragedy. In his book, the missing gifts: a tragedy, A.W. Tozer, stressed perhaps in better words, the disaster such a situation has become. Unless we wait for the Holy Spirit, we will not be able to speak like Paul  who said ‘‘When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence of words or superior wisdom...but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power’’,(1 Corinthians 2:1-4).Words alone, no matter how eloquent, are not enough. We need to be soaked in the ministry of the Holy Spirit. What we speak should not be mere words. We should speak what God speaks. We should be like David who could say,‘‘the Spirit of the Lord spoke to me; His words were on my tongue’’,(2 Samuel 23:2).This subject of the vitality of the Holy Spirit I have penned across all books written by me through His grace. In this book,we are no longer into reiterating such sentiments but rather helping you to be able to apply the Holy Spirit in your life. Please give this read the best of your attention; Come out of its pages with a bouncing testimony.

    Chapter 2

    The

    Nature

    Thereof

and the Spirit of God was hovering on the waters

    (Genesis 1:2).

If the Holy Spirit is in you, may the Lord help you to connect with Him as you read on, and if the Holy Spirit is not in you, may you  come to a point of yearning for Him to be in you. But before this, I want us to study the Holy Spirit. Who is the person of the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is the power behind the creation in the form of a person. Both the beginning of the bible and its end have something to say about the Holy Spirit. In Genesis 1:2, we hear that ‘‘ the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the face of the deep and the Spirit was hovering over the waters.’’ Why is this important to hear? Because the earth was shaped and created by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit literally created the world. The Holy Spirit is a spirit and is thus invisible. We hear that ‘‘the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was made out of what is not seen’’,(Hebrews 11:3).It means then that the sun, which we see, was made by someone we do not see. Though we see the trees, what made the forest is invisible. Even mankind was made by the Holy Spirit. Adam was no better than Leonardo Davinci’s sculpture until God ‘‘breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul’’,(Genesis 2:7,Psalms 33:6).We also hear of the ‘‘blazing breath of God’’,(Job 15:30).Samuel  talks of the omnipotent breath( 2 Samuel 22:16).We  hear of this breath in Psalms 86:15,Isaiah 30:33 and Ezekiel 37:5.This is the breath of God. The Holy Spirit is God so to speak. When God breathes, out of him comes life-giving breath. Jesus also did the same to His disciples. He breathed on them. By so doing, He gave them power. We can be so close to the Holy Spirit that our breath becomes  the breath of God.

Some ministers of the word breathe on people when praying and such people recover from different ailments. I have met ministers who can just breathe on the microphone and the crowd before them would begin to experience the heavenly wind. Now the Holy Spirit is like a wind, a breath, a spirit and is basically invisible. The definition of spirit is thus: Origin4: Middle English : from Anglo-Norman French, from Latin spiritus ‘breath, spirit,’ from spirare ‘breathe.’ Like we mentioned earlier on, the things which we see came out of the invisible. Jesus for instance was visible. Historians wrote about him. But He came out of the invisible. The Holy Spirit manifested Jesus. The angel had said to Joseph , ‘‘Don’t be afraid to take Mary home as your wife because what she has conceived is from the Holy Spirit’’,(Matthew  1:20).Jesus performed miracles through the Holy Spirit. He took the seven loaves and the fish, and when He had given thanks broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn gave the people. They all ate and were satisfied. Afterwards the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left. The number of those who ate was four thousand(Matthew 15:35-37).This miracle of bread and fish was performed by the Holy Spirit through Jesus. What was seen came out of what was not seen(Hebrews 11:3).Do you remember the miracle where Moses turned a rod into a snake(Exodus 7:9-10)?Moses also turned the Nile into blood. How did that come about? Simple, the Holy Spirit is the one who made what was mere clay to become a living soul (Genesis 2:7).He turned what was mere soil into a human being. If the Holy Spirit can turn soil into flesh and blood, then it is possible for Him to turn water into blood (Exodus 7:19-21).Remember that Jesus turned water to wine.

The first animals were created by the Holy Spirit. That is why it was not difficult for the Holy Spirit to create frogs enough to bizarrely populate the Egyptian tyranny(Exodus 8:6).I know that some people might think the frogs were increased by reproduction.  Pharaoh, as stubborn and foolish as he might have been, knew that the frogs came from God. He summoned Moses and Aaron and said, ‘‘Pray to the Lord to take the frogs away from me..’’,(Exodus 8:8).The Holy Spirit did all these things. What is visible came out of what
