Pitkirtly on Tour

About this ebook
This is another shorter story linked to the Pitkirtly Mystery series. It’s similar in length to ‘Mysterious Pitkirtly’. If this had a series number, I think it would probably be 12.5 or thereabouts. It’s best to have read at least ‘A Reformed Character’ and probably ‘Death at the Happiness Club’ before reading it.
Mr Miller from the Council has arranged for Christopher and Kyle to represent Pitkirtly at an archives event in Livingston. Jemima will also be giving a family history talk, so Dave is going along with her. It sounds simple enough, but things are soon complicated by stowaways, freezing fog, lions and unexpected visitors. It’s anybody’s guess which of these factors will prove to be the most difficult to deal with.

Chapter 1 An Experience
‘Oh well,’ said Jemima. ‘It’ll be an experience, I suppose.’
‘Aye, a bad experience,’ commented Dave, slurping at the top layer of his pint to stop it overflowing.
‘Why do you have to go, then?’ enquired Charlie Smith, leaning on the bar. He didn't necessarily want to know the answer, but business was fairly slow and he occasionally discovered something from Jemima and Dave that he would otherwise have missed.
‘We don’t have to go,’ said Jemima with a martyred sigh. ‘Only they’ve asked me to give a wee talk.’
‘What about?’ said Charlie.
‘Family history, of course,’ said Amaryllis, popping up from behind the bar, where she had almost certainly been feeding the dog illicit snacks. Charlie had noticed him looking a bit guilty in recent days. ‘Haven’t you been paying attention? Jemima’s a leading expert in her field.’
‘Only in Pitkirtly,’ said Jemima modestly. ‘I don’t know much at all compared to some of those people from the main family history societies.’
‘So when do you go over there?’ asked Charlie.
‘Tomorrow morning,’ said Dave, staring gloomily into his drink. ‘There’s freezing fog forecast. We’ll be lucky to find the place.’
‘He’s looking forward to it really,’ said Jemima. ‘I don’t usually let him drive that far in one go.’
‘It’s quite a way,’ agreed Charlie. ‘Are you coming back tomorrow too?’
‘Oh, no,’ said Jemima. ‘We’re staying overnight. In the same hotel where the event’s being held. It’ll be a nice wee holiday. Won’t it, Dave?’ she added sharply.
‘I can think of places I’d rather go on my holidays than Livingston,’ grumbled Dave.
Charlie laughed. ‘Just about anywhere, I should think.’
‘I’ve never been to Livingston,’ said Amaryllis thoughtfully. She had just returned from a foray over to the table by the window to collect glasses, and had her hands full of them..
They all turned to her and spoke as if with one voice. ‘Don’t bother.’
‘Oh, come on, it can’t be that bad. And it might be fun to see how this event of yours works out.’ She put the glasses on the bar. ‘Christopher trying to sell people on Pitkirtly. Kyle Prestonfield flashing his spectacles at them.’
‘Don't say you’re in the mood for cradle-snatching again,’ muttered Dave.
Amaryllis opened her blue eyes very wide, maybe in a futile attempt to look innocent. Charlie smothered an undignified giggle. Jemima frowned at Dave.
‘Amaryllis just likes to encourage youngsters - to give them a bit of a nudge in the right direction,’ she said reprovingly.
Dave and Charlie both gave way to unseemly chortles.
The door opened.
‘Evening,’ snuffled Charlie, caught in mid-chortle. ‘The usual, is it?’
‘Yes, thanks, Charlie,’
