      Chapter 1 — The Recollection

      I should’ve known when I saw her on the day of the mixer, with her eerie, glowing eyes and ghostly pale skin, marble smooth skin. If that wasn’t a dead giveaway — so to speak — the way she moved around the dance floor, with all that finesse, and those ice-cold hands that sent chills down my spine, should most definitely have been.

      I was the awkward one, always stepping over my own feet. By the middle of junior year, I had managed to make zero friends, and several social problems. The students at Malcolm Memorial High School were all local. This made life as tough as could be for an outsider, with dedicated bullying and near-constant sniggering a part of the curriculum.

      Veronique Cartwright stood out from the rest of her gang of giggling girlfriends, like a queen among her subjects. Tall, graceful and stunning on every level, she had this magnetic stare that threatened to hook you and reel you in to an unknown fate. And even despite the obvious beauty, there was an aura around her that made your hair stand on end, for some crazy reason.

      I have absolutely NO chance in hell with her, I used to mutter under my breath every time I saw her. There was just something about her though, that
