      CHAPTER ONE

      Beautiful Stranger

      I halted in the middle of the Hotel Del Coronado’s gift shop and stared at the picture of a woman standing on the beach in front of the enormous, wooden hotel. The woman faced away from the camera, dressed in a black 1800-something gown that brushed along the sand. A large black hat trimmed with lace and a black parasol, planted in the sand, completed the outfit.

      Something about the cover of the book, and that particular woman, held me captive. The cover boldly declared, Beautiful Stranger: The Ghost of Kate Morgan and the Hotel Del Coronado.

      Ghosts. I shivered at the thought. I had enough to deal with without being bewitched by a book about the hotel’s infamous ghost.

      Faith, my best friend, Riley, called from somewhere behind me.

      I wanted to answer her—turn away to go to her, but the picture of Kate held me transfixed. I reached out a hand to pick the book up, hoping that flipping through the pages might cure me of this urge to... to... find her.

      My hand paused just an inch from the book. Find her? What’s wrong with me? I tried to pull back, but couldn’t.

      Without my consent, my fingers reached out and grabbed the book. It was like
