Jesus said in Matthew 17:21, “howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting”.

Maximizing the Power of Fasting - Neil Acheampong

Fast

Introduction

Have you ever visited the doctor’s office and the doctor requested that you do some blood work? I have and sometimes my doctor requested that I fast before the lab. What does that mean when you have to fast before your blood work? Fasting in this context is not eating or drinking for a period of time before your blood samples are taken. The rationale I understand from my doctor is that some blood tests are sensitive to some foods and or drinks. So fasting from all foods helps to ensure the results are accurate. Similarly, fasting for the spiritual purpose is somewhat like that. We abstain from physical food for spiritual purposes.

All through the scriptures, there are many who fasted and saw incredible results. Some people fasted because God commanded it, but others fasted because they wanted God to hear their prayers. Jesus himself fasted before the beginning of his earthly ministry and was tempted by the devil after the fast. In my personal life, I have fasted on numerous occasions for many purposes and I have always seen the hand of God unleashed on my behalf.

My intent of writing this book is based on the words of Jesus in Matthew 17:19-21 where we find the real reason for which we need to fast. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief. For verily I say unto you, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard-seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth nor out but by prayer and fasting (King James Version).

After Jesus’ disciples witnessed the healing of the epileptic boy, they wanted to know why they could not heal the boy but Jesus could. In response, Jesus said that it was because of their unbelief and then he added these words, "this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. I believe that Jesus was simply saying based on the context that such kind" of faith that overpowers the power of demonic spirits is
