The dilapidated ruins of the old house sat moldering in the overgrowth of the weeds that had taken it over. The old Carter place! It was tucked away, off the main road a ways, nestled in a strange clearing that only weeds grew on. The nearest trees all leaned away from the former dwelling place, as if to try to escape from it.

It was rumored to be haunted, but that was kind of common with old abandoned houses in small, rural areas, wasn’t it? Well, rumored or not, real or not, nobody went near the ruins. It was remembered by some of the older folk in this town to have been the scene of a horrific series of murders. The body of one man, notorious in these parts for his ruthlessness and barbarity, was found crucified on the wall of the house. Nobody went anywhere near that place since. It was understood, though never spoken, that the ruins themselves were evil, and being around it too long could tear out one’s soul. Even wild animals avoided the dilapidated structure.

The moon peered from behind the clouds, and its cool light bathed the area. A small squeaking noise could be heard, and then another. Some cracking as of wood being broken, and soon the entire clearing was making noise. The weeds wilted and died, the leaves curling up and turning black, as if they had burned, yet no flame was there.

The noises grew in number and volume, and then movement stirred in the moldering wood. Slowly at first, then picking up speed, boards shown from the waste – fresh, clean painted boards, that slid around the ground. Then they began sliding up one on top of the other, to stop after they had reached an open space. After about five minutes, the ruins were gone, and the old Carter house stood, looking new, no harm ever being done to it.

And then a light came on inside the bedroom.

Her very first day at school! Lily climbed onboard the school bus. Her mother, a lovely but haggard-looking woman in her mid-thirties, smiled to her daughter as she climbed up the stairs. Lily turned around, smiled at her mother who smiled weakly back, then she turned and went into the bus. The bus driver, a large woman well in her fifties, looked gruffly at the little girl, nodded her head to the interior of the bus, and said in a rough,
