      CHAPTER ONE

      Oluwamadewa! Oluwamadewa! Please come and check me out. Steve yelled in his large baritone voice. Hurry girl, come!

      I’ve told you times without number that my name is not Oluwamadewa, but Olumadewa, I replied half-joking as I walked lazily across the room.

      See little girl, even if I am not a Yoruba guy (Yoruba is one of the tribes in Nigeria), I know Olu and Oluwa mean the same thing, Steve said in a manner that suggests ‘case closed’.

      You don’t understand; you see…

      Don’t even bother, Steve interjected, waving his hands downward. You know as much as I do that there’s no time for your lectures this morning. I called you in to ask you how I look.

      I just smiled in response.

      ’Made Steve called, (I am called ‘Made for short) please tell me how I look, he said dusting his jacket and posing as though he was in a photo session.

      As my guy, you look great, I replied him jokingly too.

      No, no! ‘Made, please tell me how exactly you think I’ll look before my interviewers today? Let’s assume you are one of the panelists, how will you see me?

      Seriously speaking Steve, your physical appearance looks great, you’re quite smart but we both know it’s not just the appearance alone that matters.

      That’s true Steve agreed, and continued And you of all people should know that I have been preparing intellectually. I have consulted my textbooks and gone to the company’s website as well; I know a thing or two about the company. More importantly the position I am being interviewed for is my turf and I have of loads of practical experience; so it simply means I am prepared both physically and intellectually. I am a complete package, right?

      Yes I know, there’s no doubt you look great. I am sure not one of the panelists will be able to resist you especially when they know you are also very intelligent. You are a great guy inside and outside.

      Oh, that’s so sweet, Steve said with his hands stretched towards me. He took me in his embrace; he was obviously blushing at my compliments. He held me tightly and I could feel his heavy breathing. He released his embrace and looked intently at me in adoration. For that brief moment that he looked at me, I could feel his emotions rising. He then bent forward to kiss me and I dodged his lips.

      W-h-y? He asked with a deep emotional voice.

      You know I have always advised you not to start whatever you cannot finish. If you start, I’ll keep you here for the next one hour. I replied in a very serious tone. I was trying very hard not to smile.

      Steve you know me, I continued unleashing my loving threats, and you might just miss your interview if we continue.

      You know it’s just seven o’clock and the interview is for nine o’clock, I can still spare a few minutes, Steve responded.

      Alright then, let’s start. I’m pretty sure someone here is forgetting the unpredictable nature of our road. So, how do you want it? I said, making a gesture.

      You are never serious, that’s all I ever hear you say but when it comes to the real thing you have a million and one reasons why it is not the right time or place. Very unserious thing he mumbled again.

      And I guess that’s all the more reason why you can’t do without me. I responded.

      True, he said.

      Please get me my document, Steve said, pointing at the large brown envelop on the table where he had neatly arranged his credentials, and let me go.

      Finally, someone is coming back to his senses I said, teasing him.

      Yes, ‘Made, although you can be naughty at times, you are always speaking the truth. That is why, despite yourself, I am helpless when it comes to loving you.

      I bet you are, I don’t need a prophet to tell me that.

      He picked up the large brown envelop that contained his credentials as he exited the apartment.

      Alright bye; see you later Steve said, waving at me.

      Alright then, don’t worry, you’ll be fine, just believe in yourself. I said looking intently at him.

      Thanks. And… yeah that reminds me, Steve said, turning back towards me. You have not prayed for me, you know you are my lucky charm. Please pray for me before I go.

      Okay…., you’ll come back with the job yours.

      Amen!!! That’s all I need, he replied as he hurried down the stairs.

      Steve can never take the steps one after the other. He does not have enough patience.
