About this ebook

'...if the prognoses are even remotely accurate, more than half of the largest, most successful companies that we know today will be entirely replaced in the next ten years because of their inability to undertake successful digital transformations. In other words, the digital transformation will be so deadly that by providing companies with the platform to agilely innovate and quickly respond to market changes, it will in fact introduce an irreversibly competitive gap that would surpass competition and it will become a race for survival. In this case, this will be a survival test not only for companies, but also for networking professionals. The odds against the networking professionals, however, seem to be fixed.'

    Problem Statement

With the advent of the digital transformation, the network will probably surpass its role as a key component of the wider extended enterprise and will become the very platform that allows and enables business and services to unfold. The benefits of networking were appreciated even by the oldest societies, which developed complex communication protocols, but the Information Technology (IT) industry’s expectations have certainly moved beyond communication and data sharing. Computer technology has irreversibly fused networking into the enterprise and most likely permanently changed its composite. This molecular link is kept at every transformative level and seems to induce almost a quantum entanglement between the network and the enterprise. When a seemingly non-relational change is made in the enterprise, the result is also seen in the network. Conversely, when a change is made in the network the result is also seen in the enterprise. This gives the enterprise architecture, which is otherwise unassuming, a paramount, highly critical role.

The enterprise however is not a static construct and has itself gone through different iterations, as did the network. This evolutionary character is often mistaken in the IT profession for an ever-increasing illegitimate complexity. Failing to see the wider picture has led to a lack of identity, and today, enterprise architecture as a domain finds it difficult to define itself. As a matter of fact, networking, as a young discipline, borrows heavily from military strategy, botany, and architecture in order to convey in a meaningful manner its constructs, functions, and artefacts. The primary aim of enterprise architecture has been to address the
