7 Mistakes Greeting Card Writers Make - Kate Harper
Introduction
Today, greeting card recipients may be a divorcee, pet owner, or someone in drug recovery. In my twenty years of working in the greeting card industry, I’ve noticed that publishers are shying away from traditional stereotypes of the happy family
and are even including pets as honored companions.
Publishers are starting to look at how people really live. Next to sympathy cards you might find pet loss cards, or next to weddings, you may find humorous divorcee cards. Overly loving, lofty Mother's and Father’s Day text is being toned down because not everyone has that perfect relationship with a parent.
The secret of writing card sentiments is learning how to express feelings in words that are normally difficult to communicate. Card text needs to uplift someone, make them laugh or help them feel they can get through a difficult time. Finding authentic messages can be challenging, but I believe the best verse comes from the writer’s own experience. Good verse hits with a zing and makes me believe someone knows exactly how I feel. Customers want a sentiment that is direct, short and honest.
If you are a beginner, before submitting your ideas to card publishers, evaluate your work and make sure you aren’t accidentally making one of these mistakes.
