It’s a brisk spring in Cascade, a small town forty-five miles outside of Colorado Springs. Even though it’s mid-May, snow still covers the mountains from the horizon. Over three hundred town folk are gathered around a casket on Buck Myers’ Ranch. There are gravestones of the Myers family dating back the last fifty years. Three family members of Buck Myers are seated in the front row.
Jenny, 30's, cute and feisty blonde that looks fabulous in jeans and or a dinner dress with high heels. She’s the only daughter of Buck Myers and Cascade’s town veterinarian. Jenny’s fiancé, Paul, 30's, tall, thin, Harvard educated with Ivy League appearance and mannerism. Last is Jenny’s daughter and Buck’s granddaughter, Zoe, 16, small frame with long brown hair and deep blue eyes.
Zoe stares at the casket unemotional while Jenny cries. Paul comforts her with gentle rub on her shoulder. The Preacher closes his bible and approaches the family. He shakes Jenny's hand and Zoe runs away. Jenny turns to pursue Zoe, but Paul stops her.
Later that day, Zoe sits on a large log by the bank of the river, looking at the fast moving river before her. She smirks as she remembers three years ago when her and Jenny moved back to Cascade to be closer to Buck after the death of his wife.
Zoe is thirteen with braces and pigtails. She sits on the riverbank staring out at the water. Zoe has a black eye and clothes are muddy and slightly torn.
Buck; 70's, tall, tough and rugged cowboy, strolls down to the riverbank on his horse like in an old western movie. He gets off the horse and the horse feasts on grass along the riverbank. Buck takes a fishing pole and tackle box to the riverbank.
BUCK: What a great day for trout fishing.
Buck places his fishing gear beside Zoe, but she doesn't acknowledge him. Buck casts his line out and slowly reels it in.
BUCK: Nice shiner.
Zoe doesn't respond. Buck continues to reel in his fishing lure.
BUCK: I see you've received a warm cascade welcome from your classmates.
ZOE: I miss Denver. No offense Grandpa.
BUCK: I understand…all your friends and memories were there. Change is tough.
ZOE: I'm sorry that Grandma died.
BUCK: Me too, Zoe.
Buck recast his line.
BUCK: Kids can be bigger jerks than adults. (smirks) I remember when my parents moved us here from New York City when I was about your age. I was so excited to leave the big city to this… look at all this nature. The only time I ever saw a wild animal was at the Brooklyn zoo. Now, I was living in God's country. I thought I'd fit in perfect, I hate cities. You'd think that city folks would be more tolerant of others but there are a lot of assholes in the city. I always say, with more population, comes more problems.
Buck reels up the lure and cast it back out.
BUCK: My mom made me wear a queer tie for the first day of school. She believed that first impressions are lasting. I thought I looked like a Dork.
Buck swiftly yanks his pole and sets the fish on his line and the fish jumps out of the water, trying to get free. Zoe watches the fight between her Grandpa and the fish from her peripheral.
BUCK: Those country boys sure gave me a warm welcome. Putting a tie on me was like wearing a red shirt in a bull-fighting ring.
Buck pulls up the trout. He unhooks the fish and releases it back into the water. Buck casts out his line and continues fishing.
BUCK: At recess, the boys in my class decided to give that warm embrace that they’ve done to most new kids.
Buck jerks his pole and a large fish takes off, dragging out fishing line.
BUCK: It was fifteen to one.
ZOE: What… happened?
Buck continues to battle the fish.
BUCK: Come here, Zoe.
Zoe lazily gets to her feet with crossed arms and Buck surprisingly hands Zoe the fishing pole.
ZOE: I can’t... I don’t... fish.
BUCK: I'm not taking it back.
Buck crosses his arms as Zoe fights with the large fish. She laughs as the fish jumps out of the water. Zoe grimaces while she battles the fish.
BUCK: I picked out the biggest boy of the bunch. I believed that if I were to knock him on his butt, the others would back down.
Zoe fights with the fish.
ZOE: Did it work?
BUCK: I went up to the biggest kid of the bunch. Dwayne Jacobs. Stupid as ever, I assumed he was kind of slow or was kicked in the head by a horse. (snickers) Anyways, Dwayne was stupid strong… corn fed country boy. This big stupid boy has been flinging hay the size you on his old man’s farm even before his balls dropped.
ZOE: Huh?
BUCK: Nothing. That’s for another talk…
The trout takes off, pulling out more line from the reel. Buck quickly grips the fishing pole with Zoe.
BUCK: Hold the rod firm... let her run. Okay, where was I? Oh, so I looked up at Dwayne Jacobs, gave him a snarl, balled up my fist so tight that my knuckles turned
