About this ebook

EPIC SPACE OPERA ADVENTURE!

In this fifth installment of the Colonel Landry Space Adventure Series, Amira is this novella's title character. She is the beautiful young jungle woman on the distant planet of Crucida. She is the leader of the humanoid tribes fighting cruel opposing tribes led by the humanoid named Aku.

Stranded on the planet twenty-five years ago when her Earth scientist parents' starcraft crashed in an electro-magnetic storm, Amira was abducted as a five-year-old by the planet's race of sentient, telepathic wolf -like creatures. She has become the warrior queen of Crucida and the "wolves" fight along side her in fierce battles against Aku.

Colonel Landry visits the planet in the starcraft Aurora. He dispatches military leader Colonel Leonard Goldstein (from the third novel, "Final Battle") and his batallion of soldiers to investigate whether the Krull--a cruel but advanced race from the Andromeda galaxy--are interfering in the planet's status quo and providing 25th Century weaponry and military aid to tribesmen seeking to overwhelm Amira's forces. Landry refuses to believe that his old friend is a Krull collaborator.

But when Colonel Goldstein learns the truth about Aku, he joins forces with Amira in a hopeless quest against all odds to defeat Aku's armies. which fight alongside high-tech Krull soldiers. The ultimate outcome of Amira's struggle with Aku and his forces is both tragic and poignant, but nonetheless embodies a triumph of the human spirit against overwhelming evil.

"Amira" is a modern re-telling of the classic "Amazon woman" story in the context of science-fiction space opera with a litte original Star Trek and a dash of Avatar thrown in for good measure. The story spans a period of twenty-five years, and with agile resort to flashback and omniscient author narrative, the reader barely notices the transitions between the involved time frames.

    BRIEFING

    Three planetary days to engagement.

Colonel Leonard Goldstein thought about that as he sat across from Colonel Kendrick Landry and his second in command, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Quinn, in a briefing room of the starcraft Aurora

Something bothering you, Leonard? Landry asked. An ironic smile played across his lips. That’s unusual for you.

But what an unusual maneuver this was.

Goldstein marveled at the idea. He and his men were going to be clad in humanoid native attire and battle gear on the Earth-like planet of Crucida and—far from being  armed in state of the art Twenty-Fifth Century  weaponry—they had to resign themselves to local spears and arrows and the klevaat.  That followed the First Intergalactic Alliance’s policy not to interfere with normal technological development in less advanced planetary cultures.

Quinn had activated the monitor across from the conference table. Local tribesmen flashed up on the screen.

    Watch this, Quinn said.

They watched the footage of one tribesman, a yellow-skinned, turquoise-eyed humanoid named Aku. Aku’s six-fingered hand nimbly plucked from a skin holster on his hip the dull grey device called a klevaat. A combination of boomerang and dagger.

Aku let the weapon fly and there was a whistle in the air.

The screen framed the face of another humanoid creature–of the same species as Aku–looking around anxiously as he heard the whistle in the air. Then abruptly his face froze in agony as the blade embedded itself into his chest. The dead or dying humanoid dropped from view on the screen.

Quinn eyed Landry across the conference table.

A very crude but effective weapon.

Landry gave a small smile. He looked across the conference table at Goldstein.

Goldstein knew and admired Landry very much. The two of them had teamed together on the old Earth colonial planet of Sirius V. Landry was the Alliance commander of the starcraft Aurora, a massive traveling space platform as large as a small continent. Goldstein had been the military commander in charge of the cruiser battalions which ultimately defeated the Eastern continent insurgents on Sirius V.

Landry was a thoroughly good and capable man.

That is my friend, Aku, Landry told Goldstein. "Fifteen Earth years ago, I was stranded on this planet after my starcraft Beluxin—and I was only a Captain at the time—crashed onto the surface. The crew died in the crash to the last man—except for me. Aku and his tribe found me. I was bloody and broken."

    Goldstein studied Landry.

Anyway, after I recuperated, I recommended to the Alliance that Aku was the prime candidate for  appointment as local governor.

Landry paused. After significant reflection, Aku accepted his role as the Alliance-assigned governor of his own tribe and the surrounding tribes. As far as I am concerned, his loyalty is without question.

Quinn cocked an eyebrow at Landry. You know, Kendrick, that not everyone shares your opinion. There is without doubt Krull intervention among the local humanoid tribes and Aku’s name has been mentioned as a collaborator.

The Krull were a harsh warrior race from the Andromeda galaxy. Their typical modus operandi was to conquer primitive planets by collaboration with local undercover governors.

Landry flushed and spoke with a slight edge in his voice. I don’t believe it and I will conclude nothing until the proof comes in.

Goldstein sat back in his chair and smiled slightly at the exchange between Landry and Quinn. He said to Landry, My men and I look forward to meeting your old friend Aku.

I believe that Aku will be vindicated after you and your men are integrated into the fighting forces of Aku’s tribe, Landry said. But Quinn is right about the Krull intervention.

Quinn nodded grimly. Notwithstanding the denials in broadcasts to the Alliance from the Krull military leader Ormlaatu. He swears up and down that he and his forces have had absolutely no interaction with the Crucida tribesman.

Landry smirked and shook his head. There are accounts of standard blasters in the hands of local tribesmen.

He looked at Goldstein. But I believe that Aku has nothing to do with it. Once you and your men are in place, I think you’ll discover whatever local leader is the one funneling Krull hardware to the tribesmen.

"I  had all my shots at Earthport," Goldstein protested.

He was on the medical deck undergoing a physical before hitting planetside. Lieutenant Colonel Lionel Beck, the Aurora’s chief physician, was pressing a hypo gun against Goldstein’s bare shoulder. Beck injected the vaccine with a whoosh of the hypo.
