Detroit area resident, Bob Moats, has been writing short stories and plays for as long as he can remember. He has lost most of his original stories, typed or handwritten, in the numerous moves he has made from his hometown of Fraser, Michigan to Northern Michigan, to Las Vegas and back to Fraser, where he now lives. Moats became one of the causalities of unemployment a year ago, and had time on his hands to finally pursue a life long dream of writing a full blown crime novel. Thus was born the first book, "Classmate Murders".What followed was a series of seven books starting with "The Classmate Murders" which introduces the main character, Jim Richards, who has to admit he has become a senior citizen, reluctantly. Richards, one day, receives an email from a childhood sweetheart asking for his help, but by the time he reaches her, she has been murdered. His life turns around and he is pulled into numerous murders of women from his high school who he hasn't seen in forty years. Along with a friend of his, Buck, a big, mustached biker, they go off to track down the killer before he can get to one former classmate, Penny Wickens, a TV talk show host who Jim has just fallen for while protecting her. The killer is also murdering the women right out from under police protection, driving homicide detective Will Trapper crazy, and he slowly depends on Jim to help. There's humor, suspense, wild chases across suburban Detroit with cops, classic cars and motorcycle clubs; murder, mayhem, a good amount of romance and a twist ending.Jim and his crime fighters, continue in the other books, traveling to Las Vegas twice, back to Detroit and out to New York to solve murders involving dominatrix; mistresses; Bridezillas; magic and strip clubs.Book titles: Classmate Murders; Vegas Showgirl Murders; Dominatrix Murders; Mistress Murders; Bridezilla Murders; Magic Murders; Strip Club Murders and Made-for-TV Murders.

    Casino Murders

    ––––––––

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

I sat in a folding chair at the edge of our backyard pool, wearing the stupid umbrella hat that my beautiful wife, Penny, bought for me at the World's Largest Gift Shop in Vegas. She was sitting next to me wearing her stupid umbrella hat. The Vegas sun could turn your skin to crisp bacon if you didn't protect yourself. I heard a noise coming from the house and got up. I took off the hat and put it on the folding chair.

I'll be back. I'm going to check on the cleaning ladies. After a while Penny started to sound like me when I got out of bed in the morning. You know, those groans and grumbles one makes as age sets in our bones. She was good at cleaning the house, but it was getting overwhelming now. I found a cleaning service recommended by Lacey, my office manager, and hired them to come in twice a week to clean.

Not that I didn't trust them, but I worried about any valuables sitting out. There was no way I could take inventory every time they left, so I just had to walk through the house and let them know I was watching. Just the thought of me popping in would help to prevent any sticky fingers.

Hola, Senor Richards, Rosaria said as I came in. She was the supervisor of the women all hustling around vacuuming and dusting.

Hola, Rosie, I replied. She giggled every time I called her Rosie.

Are you checking up on us? she asked.

Just making sure none of the girls have passed out from exhaustion. I know this is a big house to take care of. Which is why I hired you, my wife was getting tired from doing it.

We have no problems with the house. You and your wife are very clean, so it's not difficult. But thanks for worrying. Excuse me, she said and went off.

I could see they were hard at work in the living room, so I turned and went back outside. I came out to the ugly Greek statue still pouring water from a stone pitcher. I had meant to have the thing removed, but it sort of grew on me. I patted the head of the statue and went back to Penny.

I think I'll go into the office and see how they're doing. Will you be all right? I asked.

No, I'll go with you. Since I'm not doing my show anymore, I'm getting bored easily. Maybe a good murder will come in.

That surprised me. She never liked me to get involved with murder. She said it was my curse. I guess she was mellowing.

Okay, let's go, I said and turned back to the house. Rosie, I said as I found her in the kitchen cleaning the stove. We have to go solve a murder, lock up after you're done.

She acknowledged that she would. I looked at Penny, Where's Willy? I haven't seen him this morning.

He's in the bedroom on the bed sleeping last I saw him, she replied.

I went to the hallway and called him. He came flying out of the bedroom, his fur flying all around him. He needed a grooming.

We went to the car and drove into the city. It always amazed me every time I drove down the Strip. All the people and the casinos well lit, even in the day. I kept thinking, this place is a Disneyland for adults.

I pulled into the back parking lot of my building. I sat for a moment, then Penny asked, Are you getting out?

In a moment. I was just looking at the building and remembering back to when we started in the small one room office in Michigan. Then Earl joined us and we moved upstairs to a bigger office.

Yes, the office where the hookers worked out of, Penny laughed.

It was an escort service, I defended.

Yes, and you were devastated when they were shut down.

What can I say, there were a lot of good looking women going in and out of the building. It was a parade almost every day.

Blame Trapper, he got them shut down.

Yes, and he enjoyed arresting the women. Okay, I'm done reminiscing. Let's go see if the office is still busy.

We got out of the car and went to the back door just as it opened. Fred, our combination handyman and security guard came flying out with his dog, Henry. Willy bounced around with Henry as Fred stopped.

Jim, Penny, didn't expect you two to come in, he said.

Just checking the business. How are you doing?

Both the business and I are doing well. Everyone is busy with cases, although Deacon and Lynn are out with the flu.

Oh, no, Penny exclaimed. How long have they been out?

About three days now. Hopefully they are getting better.

Thanks, Fred. Don't let us stop you. The garden still looks great, I said looking around at Fred's handiwork of planting flowers and trees around the back of the building.

It's my joy in life. Well, talk later, he said and went off.

Penny and I went into the building. I looked up at the security camera that Lacey had installed so I didn't scare her coming in. I waved, not knowing if she even saw us.

We walked down the hallway towards the front. I looked in the offices of Trapper, Earl and Buck. They were all out, I presumed, since they weren’t in their offices.

Penny went through the glass door to the lobby and I heard a shriek as I was coming through.

Damn, Penny. I would expect Jim to scare me coming out here, but not you, Lacey moaned.

I came up behind Penny and said, You get so involved in your work, you don't pay attention to what is going on around you.

Yeah, but you two will need to make some noise if you drop in unexpectedly. Now, what's up?

Got any good murder cases to solve? Penny asked.

    Chapter 2

    ––––––––

Penny was starting to make me wonder. She actually was asking for a murder case. Maybe her retirement was getting to her and she wanted to get into the excitement of solving a murder.

Nope, no murders yet, but give it time. LVPD will get their hands full and we'll get the overflow, Lacey said.

I doubt they won't be able to handle the overflow. They'll just turn it over to the Sheriff's Department, I said.

Any good cases pending? Penny asked hopefully.

Penny, are you joining the team? Lacey asked.

Since I'm no longer doing my show, I need something to do to keep my mind sharp. Playing detective may be fun.

I leaned on the counter and said, It's not really fun, my dear. It's work and it can be dangerous.

Like I haven't handled danger before. How many times have I pulled your butt out of dangerous situations? she retorted.

I had to admit she did take down a number of bad guys and saved me a few times. I found you don't mess with her when she's mad.

Very true, dear. I'll yield that to you.

Good, now anything on the agenda? she asked Lacey again.

Sorry Penny, but all the cases are being worked on by Trapper, Earl and Buck. If one comes in, I'll let you know.

    "Penny, you'll need
