VEGETARIANISM, THE PHILOSOPHY
Vegetarianism is an eating habit that precludes the consumption of meat from any type of animal. Within vegetarianism, the sub-categories of veganism, fruitarianism, raw foodism, lacto-vegetarianism and ovo-vegetarianism can all be distinguished. Fruitarianism involves consuming only fruits, seeds and fruiting vegetables. Raw foodism differs between vegans and vegetarians. In the former only the consumption of uncooked vegetables and fruits is allowed, whereas the latter may include the consumption of unpasteurised dairy products. Lacto-ovo-vegetarianism does not permit the consumption of animal flesh. It allows plant foods and animal products and is the most widespread vegetarian diet in the west. Some vegetarians exclude eggs or milk from their diets. This explains the subcategories of lacto and ovo-vegetarianism.
