    MISSION TO GWAPHARD

    By the time the Wizards’ mercenaries ambushed them in the clearing, Erewan and Lambrin had been traveling four days—hard going for Erewan, who, as a courtly lady (albeit in a minor court), was not used to it.  For Lambrin, such journeys had been routine during his days as a wandering minstrel; anyhow, no journey was very hard, now that he was incorporeal.  Had Erewan been on her own, she would have been hacked to pieces.  But Lambrin was there to advise her, giving her the aid of his new Sight; moreover, she had the adrenal strength of her fury.  She was dressed in little more than rags (though her boots were good), and she had removed her jewelry, and was traveling on foot like a peasant.  The mercenaries could not have been seeking money, nor could they have deemed her a threat to their Master.  Yet their first blows were killing ones, barely parried by her sword; had they wanted her body and her honor, she could have at least understood.  But flesh they were so keen to destroy could not be their aim.  She realized that pure bloodlust motivated them, and with a shout thrust as hard as she could.

    Invisible Lambrin whispered instructions urgently in her ear: Raise your sword to parry the big one, he's about to bring his blade down on your head!  The big one, she sensed, was the one with the vicious spike jutting from his helmet, face and beard already splattered with
