The shadows of passers-by climbed across the walls and scampered around her. Lungile stood still, hoping they wouldn't notice her. She was calm at first, but only at first. One person brushed passed and she stifled a yell.

They turned to her, standing in the middle of the sidewalk. It was just glances, nothing to worry about. That didn't stop her stomach from tying itself in a knot. Around her, the yammering of conversation continued. She tried to convince herself that this meant they weren’t paying attention to her.

The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. She looked to one side. One person had stopped and was staring. She glanced away and tried to breathe. Another person stopped. The knot in her stomach tightened. Nothing was wrong. Just breathe.

Their eyes crawled over her like dirty cockroaches. More people began to stop and stare. It couldn't be nothing if everyone kept staring. Something was wrong with her.

The voices were stopping one by one. The silence took over as everyone stared. Why couldn't they just leave her be?

She dropped to one knee. Her vision narrowed. The voices finally stopping entirely. She glanced up at the crowd. They stared and judged.

She saw it in their eyes. She was a sick girl. They knew she was sick.

Her head began to spin. They moved closer to her in lockstep. Each step was like a gunshot. She flinched.

They stared down at her. Sweat dripped down her brow. She was diseased and they knew it. They wanted to get rid of her.

Lungile didn't even notice she was hyperventilating. Everyone was too close. The knot twisted and a sharp pang of pain made her gasp.

Her stomach tore open. The tentacled anxiety burst out. It screamed. Then she did.

Lungile's eyes snapped open. The world was spinning around her. She couldn't breathe. Her blanket had wrapped itself around her throat. She pulled at it, hurling it away.

She gasped for air. The blanket recoiled, perching itself on the opposite side of the bed. Lungile rubbed her forehead. What's wrong with you?

It rocked coyly. The blanket whispered as it creeped closer.

She pushed it back. Don't give me that. You tried to kill me.

It snaked around her, whispering in its hoarse voice.

She turned away. Don't lie to me. I have a hard enough time as it is.

The blanket curled around her shoulders.

    … I am cold. A little.

    It tightened
