    Grave Communications - DeWayne Taylor

    Chapter 1

It was another beautiful day in the great city of York Town. I was walking to work and enjoying the sights. Traffic wasn’t too bad at this time of the morning. It was just a short walk to my office so most mornings I just flat-footed it on down the road. I walked past the park on the way. There weren’t many kids here yet, but by 9am it would be packed.

Across the street from my office was the coffee shop. I always started there because I needed the coffee and the company. Joe was the owner and a friend. He had a gruff voice but his personality was golden.

Well if it isn’t the famous Pit Viper. Private Investigator extraordinaire. To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit? My business really took off after my last case. It was a much publicized kidnapping involving some wealthy collectors of rare artifacts. After one was murdered, I was hired to protect the other. Not only did I keep her safe, I tracked down the killer and brought him to justice. Marie Stills was the girl I protected. We quickly became friends, and we still talk every once in a while. She went back to London to carry on her father’s business.

Hey Joe. How about some coffee? The strong stuff.

Anything for you Mr. Viper, heheheh. Will you take a regular cup or should I get the fine china? Hehhehheh.

You’re a card Joe. A real funny guy. What’s new in town?

Not much today. Maybe you can rustle up something interesting for us.

I hope so. These little cases are nice to have but I like the big stuff. The dangerous stuff. The stuff where you have to put your life on the line ....

Look out. It’s getting deep in here. Hehhehheh. Say listen, can you mention my shop in the next TV interview you do? I could sure use the business.

My pleasure Joe. You can be the official coffee shop of the Pit Viper Detective Agency. See you later my friend.

Yeah, see you later. I grabbed my coffee and headed across the street to my office. As I approached my building I couldn’t help but reminisce about how I got here. After my brother got out of the police academy, he transferred here to be a cop. He was doing well until he busted the wrong druggie and brought down the fury of the York Town Mafia. Kingpin ran the city and didn’t like cops that got in his way. My brother was part of a task force that tried to raid Kingpin’s main stash. It was a failed attempt. Several cops died and my brother Sam disappeared. I came to York Town to find the truth.

As I walked in the door of my office, I ran into Courtney who was now my secretary. I had decided to hire one after my business took off. I had more cases then I could handle. I had anything from missing pets to missing spouses. I needed the help and I could think of no one better for the job. She is my friend CD’s wife. Her and CD had helped me greatly with the kidnapping case and I knew she could do the job.

Hey Pit, it’s about time you got here. I need you to sign this and then sign these two. You need to also certify Jimmy’s report; it’s on your desk and ....

    Good morning to you too.

There is no time for salutations. We have work to do. I told you she could handle it. She was waving papers and talking and pointing. I didn’t realize how busy I had become. I hired Courtney and her nephew, Jimmy to help me out. Jimmy does little things like follow people, find lost pets, watch people’s mailboxes, the stuff I don’t want to do but still needs to be done in order to get paid. I would never put him in danger, and I’m sure Courtney wouldn’t let me.

And don’t forget about your 9am with Mrs. Munsey.

    Who’s that? I don’t remember a Mrs. Munsey.

She called yesterday after you left. She needs to see you about some freaky phone calls she has been getting.

If she called after I left, then how am I supposed to remember her?

I sent you a text. Don’t you ever check anything? I grabbed my S6 and looked at it. Sure enough there it was; a text from Courtney. It read ‘Munsey 9, freaky calls’. I did what any self-respecting man would do ....I lied.

I must not have got that one. So what’s it about?

She said she was getting phone calls from someone and they were scaring her.

You mean like threats? Did she call the police?

Why don’t you wait until 9 and ask her, dummy? I signed where she needed me too and then I went to my office. I sat down at my desk and looked over Jimmy’s report. He had been following leads in a vandalism case. Someone was knocking over the Perkin’s trash cans every night. They were sure that it was their neighbor’s kids. According to Jimmy, it was a family of raccoons that were coming down from the woods at night to find food. It was rare to see wildlife in the city but as we get bigger, their space gets smaller. Sometimes the animals don’t have a choice.

A knock on my door let me know that it was 9 o’clock. Mr. Viper, Mrs. Munsey is here to see you. Now she was all professional. Where did ‘ask her yourself dummy’ go I wonder?

Thank you Courtney. Show her in please. Courtney stepped aside and in walked Mrs. Munsey. She was of average height and weight. She wasn’t a beauty but she wasn’t ugly by no means. I would give her about a 7 on the old 1-10 guy scale. She was dressed in a long dress that almost touched the floor. She had on high heels that added to her height. As I looked closer, I noticed that her clothes were DK and that cloth was expensive. She must come from or had married into money. Her total outfit would run about $2500 not counting the shoes. Her purse alone was $450. This may prove to be lucrative.

Mrs. Munsey please have a seat. Can I get you anything to drink?

No thank you Mr. Viper, and please call me Claire.

Ok Claire, let’s get right down to it. Courtney tells me that you have been receiving some disturbing phone calls. Can you elaborate for me?

Well, it was yesterday morning when I received the first and in the afternoon when I received the second.

Are these phone calls threatening in any way?

Not really. The first one I couldn’t make out anything. It was just some static. But the second one really scared me. That’s when I decided to call your office.

    What did the caller want?

I’m not really sure. I let the calls go to voicemail because I didn’t recognize the number. When I played back the message, I couldn’t make out all the words.

    Do you still have them?

Yes. Courtney said to bring the phone with me in case you wanted to hear them. Man she was smart.

Please play the first message. She queued up her phone and played the first message.

    *sssshhrrrrhhhsssssshhrrhhhssshhshrrhrhsshshshhrrrrrh*

Wow. That is hard to tell what they are trying to say. What about the second one? Is it like the first?

Kind of but some of the words came thru. Listen for yourself.

*sshhh like ssrrhhhe help ssshhrr love ssshhrrrrhhs Claire sshhhhrrrsssshhhhrrrrssshhhhrrrr don’t ssshhrrrhsshhrrrrr*

This message isn’t much different. What few words I can understand don’t make any sense. Can you tell by the voice who it might be?

Oh yes. I know exactly who it is. It is my husband.

Have you contacted the police? If you feel threatened by your husband, you should let them know ....

I’m afraid you don’t understand Mr. Viper. I’m not afraid of my husband.

Then why did you reach out to me?

These messages came yesterday. My husband died a week ago.

I’m so sorry to hear that .... It took me a second to process what I was just told. Wait ....what? How can those be from him if he died a week ago?

That’s why I reached out to you Mr. Viper. This is what I need you to find out. The look on my face must have been priceless. I couldn’t think of anything to say. Had she really just told me that her dead husband was calling her on the phone?

Claire, I don’t know what to say. Are you sure the voice is his?

100 percent. We were married for 15 years and I know his voice.

Could the messages have been delayed by the service provider? Maybe they were sent before his death?

I don’t know about that. Can you help me settle this once and for all?

I will try but I need to know more. You cannot hide anything from me. It’s very important that you be completely truthful at all times with me. Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth? Rock and Chan, not a classic but it had its moments.

Yes. I will tell you anything you need to know.

Ok, let’s start with his death. What happened and when?

Last week Steve and his friend Bill took off to go golfing together. They rode in Bill’s plane. He was a pilot. They ran into some trouble and were kidnapped by the mafia guy ....um  King something.

Kingpin? What would Kingpin want with your husband?

I don’t believe it was my husband so much as his friend Bill ....Bill Yates.

The super millionaire guy? Didn’t he get killed in that plane crash a week or so ago?

Yes and my husband was on board with him at that time.

So Kingpin grabbed Yates for money, but why your husband too?

My husband helped Bill develop his products for market. We are fairly wealthy too. The two of them were ransomed for millions.

    Did the cops know?

No. We were told not to go to the cops. We wired the ransom to an off shore account, and the two were supposed to be released. It was on the return home that the plane went down. I believe it was deliberate. Kingpin had no intention of letting them live.

Why kill them after getting the money? This story was getting good. All of these years and finally, I would be getting paid to take down Kingpin. I could hear the fireworks in my heart exploding with joy and celebration.

I’m not sure. Maybe Steve could identify the kidnappers.

Didn’t you see your husband at the funeral?

Not really. It was a closed casket service. They only shipped back what they found. The service was this past Saturday. Bill’s service will be this Saturday.

Why were they so far apart? I thought maybe you would do a joint service since they were good friends.

Bill’s wife, Beth, wanted a big event and we just wanted a quiet service for just family.

I slid a piece of paper and a pen across the desk and asked her for some information. "I need names and addresses for Bill, the golf course, where Bill kept his plane, anybody you can
