About this ebook

A world within a world - a world within our world.
Fern is a twenty-one-year-old earth fae with a longing for adventure and a rebellious fire burning in her veins. Inspired by her friend Amber, who broke the rules of the fae society to be with a werewolf, Fern also longs to explore a relationship outside of her own people.
Sometimes, though, getting what you wish for can turn out to be the worst possible thing, and Fern finds this out in a bad way. After a series of disappearances in the human town of Milford, in which the involvement of preternatural creatures is suspected, Fern goes to investigate the mystery herself. Her close male friend Mercury is everything a best friend could be: supportive, kind, caring and gentle - but he's also madly in love with Fern, in secret, of course.
When Fern is bewitched and kidnapped by the vampire Liam, he places her under a powerful spell that has her falling for him and losing her grip on reality. The only one who can rescue her from Liam's clutches is the hapless Mercury - but does he have the power to combat the potent magic of the vampires? Is his love for Fern strong enough to defeat the most powerful opponents he has ever faced?

    Chapter 1 - Fern

It was an hour after dark already. Arthur was not going to be happy with me. Having said that, he wasn’t ever happy with me, and there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it. I walked along the south bridge and crossed the road so that the fae reserve wall was on my right. I counted the steps.

Arthur was a great stepdad and all. He did everything a stepdad ought to do. He took care of my mom, made sure her reputation stayed clean, and provided for us. The only thing that didn’t work was the two of us under the same roof.

We were both earth talent users. I was into plants. He was into metals. We shouldn’t have clashed, but we did.

I stopped when I’d counted out the steps. My house was just on the other side of the wall from here. I looked left, right and left again. There was no one around. I held out my hands and closed my eyes, focusing on the life around me: the roots in the ground, the leaves of the trees and the way they spoke to each other.

A tree from the other side of the wall reached over the top, its branches creaking as they bent. I held onto them and willed them back up again, letting the tree lift me over. When I touched down on the other side, I pressed my hand against the tree trunk. I could feel the tree’s life, the essence of it.

I tiptoed over the gravel road and climbed the low fence after that. So maybe my house wasn’t exactly on the other side of the wall, but the place where I’d gotten over was the closest. Whenever I came home this late, I couldn’t go through the main gate. Back when Hocus was still the guard it had been easy to get him to sneak us in and out. That was how Amber had met her big bad wolf.

Since then Muriel, the council leader and self-appointed governor of In Caelum, the fae reserve, had upped security. Hocus was a giant fae, but as gentle as they came. He’d let two werewolves get in. He wasn’t fit for the job anymore. Now he guarded storage facilities just off the wheat fields where no one wanted to steal anyway.

I opened the back door and tiptoed into the kitchen. The smell of food hung in the air and I breathed in. I walked to the pot and lifted the lid.

    Where have you been?

    Arthur’s voice made me jump.

    Out.

    Were you in the reserve?

I turned around with the most innocent look I could.

    Where else would I be?

He folded his arms over his chest, leaning against the doorpost. Arthur didn’t look like us. He had white hair and eyes that were so dark they looked black. His skin was a deep brown from spending so much time in the sun. My mom and I had brown hair, freckles and skin that shimmered when we didn’t use glamour.

I want you in here before dark. It’s the rules.

The rules are we’re supposed to be in the reserve before dark.

He narrowed his eyes at me. If you were actually in the reserve at all I would let that slide.

I dropped my innocent look. You can’t make all these rules for me. You’re not my dad.

I pushed past him and marched up the stairs. I heard him come up after me, his footsteps heavy like he was made of metal. For intents and purposes, he was.

When are you going to accept that I care for you? I know I’m not your biological father, but I have done everything a father should. I’m here for you.

I shook my head. You’re here for mom so that she doesn’t look like a scandal because she had me with some stranger. You’re here to protect her. You’re not here for me, and I’m not going to play happy families because it makes you happy.

He opened his mouth to say something but closed it again without saying a word. He knew I was right. He was here because the governor before Muriel had appointed him as my mom’s guardian – the one who would keep her image as it should be. Lucky for her they’d fallen in love. Lucky for me I could use that against him for the rest of his life and not listen to his sorry ass trying to boss me around.

    Where is she?

Arthur sighed. She’s working late. They have a meeting at the Hall.

I slammed my door after I’d gotten what I needed. I didn’t want to hear more from him. My mom worked as Muriel’s personal assistant and when they had late night meetings – which happened a lot – she had to work late, too.

She didn’t get overtime. Who in this place did? It was all for the greater good, after all. I walked to the window and pushed it open. I wasn’t going to sit in this godforsaken house if mom wasn’t home and Arthur stalked the halls like some jailer. I needed to get out and breathe the air. I needed to get out of here and be free.

I pretended like I knew what freedom was like.

The jump down from the second-floor window wasn’t so bad. The grass was soft when I landed on it. Being a leafbinder made everything easier for me. I hadn’t always known how powerful I could be, but when Amber went out to stop the witches – which turned out to be a lone wolf instead – from overthrowing the government that allowed preternatural communities to exist at all, I found my true strength.

I moved to the fire neighborhood. All the houses were the same as mine. Some were slightly bigger to allow space for more family members. Some were smaller. We were all equal in wealth.

I threw stones at Amber’s window until she pushed it open. When she saw me, she waved and disappeared again. A moment later she opened the front door and stepped onto the porch.

You have to stop sneaking out like this, she said after she hugged me. Her white waist-length hair was up in a bun. She sat down on the porch steps.

I would, if there was any fun at staying home. But you keep sneaking out to see Balfour. Why am I not allowed to say anything about that?

She shrugged. Balfour was a werewolf and fae weren’t allowed to mix with other species, especially werewolves. They were aggressive and power-hungry and not to be trusted. Except this one was different. Amber had been seeing him on the sly when the whole war with the witches had started. When they won and managed to save the day, her sins were forgiven, but she’d been banned from seeing him.

    That never stopped her.

I go out in the day when I’m allowed to.

    So do I.

She shook her head. Your home is really not that bad. I know you dad is hard on you, but look at what you’ve become despite it. He just cares.
