Introduction
While there is a strong argument that the most important club in everyone’s golf bag is the putter, the vast majority of golfers take a good deal of time in getting a driver to suit them. On an 18 hole golf course it is likely that the driver will come out up to 15 times and the ability to hit it consistently, straight and long, provides the foundation to each of those holes. The only time that golfers are able to tee the ball up is off the tee itself. It is a major advantage to do so because the driver’s club face has minimal loft, usually single figures so it requires precision to hit the ball on the sweet spot. Succeed and the ball sails down the fairway to set yourself up for the rest of the hole, fail and you are off in the rough somewhere looking for your ball.
While there is constant pressure on tour professionals to seek length, and they have plenty of time to practice, statistics show that they only hit the fairway an average of 62% of the time. The figures for those balls that just go into the first cut are not available but nevertheless professionals do intend to stay on the fairway. There are times on Par 5s which professionals hope to reach in two shots that missing the fairway takes away that opportunity. Handicap golfers will rarely have the ambition to hit a Par 5 in two but they want and need to be in play for their second shot.
Let’s face it. You are jealous of the distance some of the professionals hit the ball. Several don’t even have to take our driver on seemingly long Par 4s. A three wood and nothing more than an 8 iron seems quite sufficient when you might have to play a similar hole with your second shot that three wood after
