About this ebook
From Jon Torres, the author of the Amazon-distributed novel "CHICKENS: A Space Adventure" comes this short story.
Quirky action story where a young chicken named Kiku (please do not call her a chick!) runs into trouble without even trying. Includes a rooftoop chase, a wet ladle, a nuclear explosion, and a couple of bowls of pastry dough. Oh, and those silly little hammers that go "Squeap!" So, pretty much a typical day in the life of Kiku. Unless her courage is overtaken by her sassy mouth(!

KIKU IN THE CORNER - Jon Torres
Kiku in the Corner
by Jon Torres
This particular story features a rather young Kiku, future tactical officer in Chickens: A Space Adventure. This takes place years before the space journeys, before Kiku had even thought about space-travel. It is entirely earthbound, so to speak, set on the planet of the chickens (Yes-- in case you haven't figured it out: Kiku, along with everybody else in this story, is a chicken). Hope you enjoy it.
THE BEACH
*****
Little Kiku stood at the edge of the cliff, wings spread, practicing her forms. The chilly wind tousled her feathers, and a sudden gust almost knocked her over, but she didn't mind. It was more fun than staying inside and memorizing lessons. Uncle Peng said it's not healthy for a small chicken like her to catch a bad cold while doing her haktas outside.
But Uncle Peng says a lot of things: don't eat too late at night, don't play in the mud, don't start fights at the market, blah-blah-blah. He would not be her first choice for picking out a fun Uncle. He wouldn't even make the twentieth. If you wanted to describe the opposite of fun, you'd do best to think of him and his sour face telling you to stop whatever it was you were doing.
Kiku took a deep breath, and focused her thoughts on her forms. Hakta Number Five: Gently Lift The Crickle-Bug To The Sun. Pause, and breathe twice at the sky. Look right, while stepping thrice to the left. Step back while pointing forward, and settle into Hakta Six, One-Legged Angler at Wharf. Longer pause. To demonstrate the patience and serenity of a lone fish-trapper. Trace the clouds to the left, softly planting both feet on the ground. Squat low in a double-wide stance, and gather energy using your breathing and your center.
Preparing for Hakta Seven: Lift the Great Cauldron. Kiku's gaze wandered past the edge of the cliff and regarded how the ocean met the sky a great distance away. Her eyes sweeping ever so slightly downward, she noted the ocean also met with the bottom of her cliff far below. The fishing boats on the water and the merchants walking about on the boulevard looked like little toy figures.
This could wait, I think,
she said to herself. Secretly she was trying to decide whether to choose diligent forms-practice for now, or look for more entertaining things to do first. She decided to give the matter a bit more thinking.
Enough thinking!
she declared, as she leapt off the cliff.
Gaining tremendous speed as she fell, Kiku gasped as the wind roared through her ears. It was much louder than she expected.
Whheeeeeeeheee!!! It tickles! Bwahahahaaaaaaah!!!
The petite young chicken plummeted so rapidly that the dust- sliding off her feet resembled jet-contrails. Plunging like a rocket, her little body vanished into the thick
