    Introduction

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill was first published in 1983. It is a horror novella. The book is written in the style of a traditional Gothic novel.

The story is primarily about a mysterious ghost. This supernatural creature haunts a small English town and an old house called Eel Marsh House. With each appearance of the ghost of the woman, a child dies in the town.

The novel was adapted into a movie of the same name in 1989. It was a highly successful film, admired by critics, reviewers, and audiences.

The novel has also been adapted into a stage play. It is noticeable that the play happens to be the second longest running play in the history of the West End. The longest running play is The Mousetrap.

Arthur Kipps, the central character, is a young solicitor, a lawyer. The plot revolves around his predicament and how he is involved in something that he had never wanted to be involved in.

Most of the reviews that the author received after the publication of the novella were highly positive and encouraging.
