    MONDAY

    It was Homeroom, and Kiana Smart and Ezra Eze McAvoy, both 11 years old, proudly stood on the left and right side of Miss Calloway (better known as Miss C) as she explained to the class what it meant to be a leader. They had just been chosen by their classmates to be the nominees to represent two opposite sides in the run-off election for class president. Whoever won in the class election could run for President of the fifth grade class in the school wide election.

    Walking away from Kiana and Eze with her arms folded, Miss C began to walk up and down the rows of her anxious and excited students. Class, you have selected two leaders to represent you well in our election for classroom president. Now, who can tell me what it means to be a great leader? Ezra and Kiana you may take your seats now.

    Kiana’s best friend, Nicole, blurted out, I know, Miss Calloway! A great leader should always be prepared! Not only should you come to class with your book, notebook, pen and mind ready to learn, but you should have a heart and be able to make friends easily. She cut her eyes over to the brown, curly head boy sitting against the bulletin board named Ezra Eze McAvoy.

    Yes, Nicole, that is correct; however, you have to remember to raise your hand and wait for me to call on you before blurting out the answer.

    Yeah, Nicole, raise your hand first! Ezra mocked Miss C as he leaned over his desk to make sure that Nicole knew that he was talking to her.

    The class clapped, and yelled with a roar, Woot Woot! Go, Kiana! (which were mostly the girls) and Yayyy! Ezra! (which were most of the boys). It was obvious that this election was going to be about the boys against the girls. The girls put their hands together and made hearts with their fingers to show Kiana that
