About this ebook

The study of Islam is a popular and interesting theme, however, has often been undertaken in an uncritical manner and with too much idealization. Preface

The study of Islam is a popular and interesting theme, however, has often been undertaken in an uncritical manner and with too much idealization. This book explores the transformation of Islamic society and culture from tribalism to feudal forms and ways of life. The transformation had taken place under the teachings of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be Upon Him) and four pious Caliphates.

Islam was originated from Mecca, Hejaz (now Saudi Arabia), by Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), and spread into the Middle East, Europe (especially Spain, and North Africa, and now all over the world.) The living conditions of many Arabs could have been considered to be deplorable before the advent of Islam. The Prophet firmly established the fundamental beliefs of Islam such as the Unity of God (Toheed), Prophet-hood (Messengers of God Almighty Allah), Akhirat (The Day of Judgments), Angels, and Quran (The Holy Book). He also entrenched the key pillars of Islam such as SHAHADA (The Testimony of Faith) SALAT (Prayer), ZAKAT (Poor Tax), SAWM (Fasting), and HAJJ (Travelling to Mecca in the last month of Islamic calendar). Such values provided guidance and community for people and allowed them a safe and peaceful way to live their lives.

If we look at the present day, there are many challenges faced by Muslim Ummah. These include the political, socio-economic, sectarianism, extremism, educational, cultural, regional such as Kashmir and Palestine, Islamophobia of the West, and lack of modernity. Due to these challenges and discrimination in some areas, some Muslims feel that migrating to different countries provides safer living conditions for their families.

Those with a good understanding of the Muslim faith will know that Islam is a peaceful and accommodating religion, and has been the backbone of many very successful communities across the world.

However, there are some outlawed, clandestine organizations such as Islamic State, Boko Haram and Al-Qaida that misinterpret the teachings of Islam for their vested interests. The understanding of the true concept of Islam especially Jihad (The Holy War) is needed not only for Muslims but also for rest of the world, as it is in education and understanding that we may effectively fight such extremism. The dangers posed by such groups are only likely to grow in the future if left unchallenged by a zero-tolerance policy and even-handedly. The role of Organization of Islamic States (OIC), Arab League, and Muslim Clerics is crucial in this regard.

N.B There are many variations of spellings for Arabic words, particularly when translated into the Latin alphabet.
