About this series
This eBook, Poems of Heroes and Indignation, is the 8th of 9 books of Charles Wylie's poetry, complementing those of Love, Friends, Mystery, Parting and Grief, Faith and Family, Fun and The Sea. My profession has led me to meet many heroes and I'm gald to be alive thanks to them, and still speaking English. Indignation is something I don't normally express, but it does come out in verse sometimes.
After losing two homes to WWII bombing, and decades at sea, at peace and at war, in every ocean, visiting every continent, I have a well-developed sense of right and wrong, and how different cultures approach such things. How I wish I had always lived up to the principles drummed into me. You will find plenty to think about in this eBook. I hope you enjoy it.
Titles in the series (8)
- Poems of Friends
1
Charles Wylie has been quietly badgered for years by family and friends to publish his poetry, so here we have some about friends. (Please let me know if we are still friends after you read what I've written.) Of all the pleasant things in the world to do, dining with friends comes second only to dining with family. Some of what follows germinated over the dinner table after a memorable remark by the unwary. Charles reckons that if he can write poetry then so can almost anyone else. he hopes that readers will be inpired to have a go. What are you waiting for? I'm sure you can do better than this, and it's certainly a lot of fun.
- Poems of Faith and Family
5
This 6th eBook of nine, about Faith and Family, complements those of Love, Friends, Mystery, Nature, Parting and Grief, Fun, Heroes and Indignation, and The Sea. So many of my acquaintances have said "I couldn't possibly write poetry." I hope this book will go some way to convince you that you can. It's just a matter of jotting down some bullet points and then letting your mind just go free. It is my hope that you will find inspiration here to write your own verses about your loved ones. If I can, so can you. Give it a whirl!
- Poems of Mystery
2
This third book of my poems ranges widely over subjects as far apart as peace and war, the art of Haiku (like some Japanese experts I'm still learning), honour, excellence, imagination, mourning, et alia. In the other eight eBooks of the series you will find the themes of Love, Friends, Nature, Parting and Grief, Faith and Family, Fun, Heroes and Indignation, and The Sea. Part of my motivation in finally succumbing to years of friendly pressure from family and friends to publish is to encourage those who say "I could never write poetry." It doesn't have to be so. It wouldn't be too difficult to improve on what you find here. Go on! Have a go!
- Poems of Nature
3
Look no further to find the glories of the English countryside and the excitement of the seas both north and south of the equator. This 4th eBook of my poetry, about Nature, complements those on Love, Friends, Mystery, Parting and Grief, Faith and Family, Fun, Heroes and Indignation, and The Sea. From the glorious hills of Gloucestershire to the coastal paths of Cornwall and the tumbling waters of a Lake District stream, here I found enchantment. I do hope you will be inspired to write some verses yourself. It's easier than you probably think. Come on then, show me how to do it!
- Poems of The Sea
7
As a seaman I have spent so much time afloat that the sea has almost become my natural environment, so this 9th of nine eBooks, complementing those of Love, Friends, Mystery, Parting and Grief, Faith and Family, Fun, and Heroes and Indignation, should give you a feel for the thrill of being at sea whether in a warship or a sailing boat. After 38 years in the Royal Navy, and a lifetime of sailing, I still get a thrill as the bow lifts to the first wave on leaving harbour. I hope that comes across in these verses and that you will find the same kind of enjoyment from it all that I do. Bon voyage!
- Poems of Parting and Grief
4
We all have to bear the pain, at some stage or another, of losing family or friends that we love or cherish. Let no-one tell you that the pain will die with time: it doesn't. What's more, we need the grief to hold on to the ones we lose, so don't fight it: bear it. Crying is allowed: even for roughy toughy sailors like me. You will probably feel my tears when you are reading some of these poems. I hope my poetry does not distress you, but rather helps to sustain you when that throat-drying pain wells up and stops you from speaking. Every day I count my blessings, including memories of good times spent with loved one who are no longer with us. You may well find relief in putting your thoughts into verse, as I have. It's much less difficult than you might think. More cheery thoughts can be found in the volumes that go with this one, on Love, Friends, Mystery, Nature, Faith and Family, Fun, Heroes and Indignation, and The Sea.
- Poems of Fun
6
Among the serious matters of life there is plenty of room for fun, so I hope you will get some out of this 7th of nine eBooks, complemented by those of Love, Friends, Mystery, Nature, Parting and Grief, Faith and Family, Heroes and Indignation, and The Sea. Perhaps this is the area in which you will find it easy to write verses yourself. If I can, you can: promise! The topics in this book are widely varied, from fun in the garden to fun at the dentist's surgery. Have a good time.

Charles Wylie
Charles Wylie is a professional British seaman and an amateur dinghy and yacht sailor. He is the luckiest man on the planet, being husband to Jean, father of four, grandfather to nine and godfather to ten. Poetry is a hobby, together with sailing, chess, Scottish Country Dancing, languages, and a variety of other pursuits. He is tickled pink to have been headhunted at the age of 78. As a seaman he had visited all the continents in ships by the age of 21 at over 50 ports and had survived his destroyer being bombed in the Korean War when only just 17 years old. He attributes a reasonable command of the English language to his education at Taunton's Grammar School in Southampton, which set him up for life in four short years. He is particularly grateful to the Royal Navy for its having been a father figure and a source of immense pride for over 65 years. The navy promoted him 10 times, but because he started as a Boy Seaman that means he achieved only the modest rank of Commander (happy with that.) His naval friends (to whom he pays equal respect) range from Able Seamen to Admirals. He is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, a Freeman of the City of London and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute. His poetry was written for himself (and occasionally for family or friends) and is published now after many years of friendly badgering by dear ones. Self-publishing through Smashwords was chosen because he is confident that no modern publisher would want to publish his generally old-fashioned rhyming and scanning verses.Charles is a happy man, much blessed.
