About this ebook

Jim Emerton is a philosopher, a poet and a nature lover as well as an internationally-known pigeon racing expert. His travels around the world and his explorations of the rural environment near his home have given him endless food for thought about the natural world. These little pieces are his musings about creatures of all kinds and sizes, from the exotic to the familiar, he has encountered on his travels. There is something here for readers of all ages.

Jim’s World of Creatures is a collection of thoughts and jottings about the many creatures, from ants to antelopes, Jim has encountered in his long and varied life. Designed to entertain readers of all ages.

    Nature

    Nature is the living God

Forms us, shapes and takes us

There is no start, no finish Its power will never diminish

    Wise man does not bother

He knows his centre, the Earth Mother

The death of a spider, firefly burned

The wheel of life has always turned.

    ALLIGATOR

Perched on a thunderous V8-powered airboat, we glided over the Florida Everglades. The air was alive with excitement as we spied an alligator’s prehistoric nostrils protruding from the water surface. They belonged to a large specimen of the top predator of this vast ecosystem, I reflected as we drifted in towards those menacing alligator eyes. The paradox lay in the reality of the beasts consuming the marshmallows we tossed in gay abandon from the boat.

    ANT

Industrious and admirable, with a remarkable work ethic, the ant is admired by man for its tenacity and social organisation. My life has been touched by them, and I have felt the venom from red ants, black ants and green ants. The giant ant of film fantasy inspires fear and awe in the minds of men. I recall the time when scaling a rock in the Peak District, I broke out into a spontaneous dance as I realised that my feet were covered in a swarm of the flying insects.

Ants behave as one organism within the colony, yet each is an individual, like a metaphor for human society. Within global ecosystems they are as important as humanity itself. Imagine one taking honey from your eyelids!
