    Jean Racine (1639-1699) was the main figure of classical tragedy in the 17thcentury, as Molière (1622-1673) was of comedy. After an advanced education at the convent of Port-Royal, he moved to Paris where, from 1663 onwards, he held a position in the court of King Louis XIV and had a brilliant career as a dramatist. He is mainly known for his tragedies, of which he wrote eleven. They are written in simple, poetic language, are inspired by Greek mythology (Andromaque), Roman history (Britannicus) or Christian history (Athalie), and explore human passions.
