      Welcome to Santa Fe, New Mexico

      Santa Fe is well known as a center for arts that reflect the multicultural character of the city. It has been designated as a UNESCO Creative City in Design, Crafts and Folk Art. It is one of the largest and most important art markets in the United States. Santa Fe has been a legendary trading center for years.

      The Santa Fe area was occupied for at least several hundred years by indigenous people who built a number of Pueblo villages. One village built after 900 a.d. is now downtown Santa Fe. The Native Americans built homes that centered around the site of today’s Plaza. With a population now over 69,000 Santa Fe meaning holy faith in Spanish is the oldest city in the United States.

      Don Pedro de Peralta founded Santa Fe in 1607 at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. He called the area La Villa Rea de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis, which is Spanish for the Royal Town of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi.

      In 1680, Lamy arrived to Santa Fe and became a bishop. He built the Santa Fe Saint Francis New Mexico. During 1692, the New Mexico territory was reconquered by a Spaniard named Don Diego de Vargas. It was considered an important base for fur traders. The city’s status as a capital of the Mexico territory of Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico after Mexico achieved independence from Spain. In 1912, New Mexico was admitted to the United States with Santa Fe its capital.

      Santa Fe is laid out around a central plaza. There are many outdoor sculptures in the Plaza. On the east side of the plaza is the beautiful Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi and at the north side is the Palace of Governors. The city has many museums near the downtown Plaza.

      Artists and writers were attracted to the cultural richness of Santa Fe, the beauty of the landscape, and its dry climate. Santa Fe continues to have fresh air with a chilly, dry winter and hot summer. The city usually receives 6 to 8 snowfalls during winter. The heaviest rainfall occurs in July and August.

      Santa Fe offers skiing, snowboarding, hiking trails, bike paths and horseback riding.
