    Ghost Of A Chance - C.A. Tibbitts

    Chapter One

Vanessa blew out a large breath, trying to dislodge a pesky strand of auburn hair that refused to stay in her usual ponytail. Damn hair! She should have never followed the advice of the ten-dollar hair stylist to cut bangs into her previously all-one-length locks.

She was right in the middle of attempting to retrieve the bracelet her Aunt Millie had given her for graduating high school. Damn bracelet had chosen the wrong moment for the damaged clasp to give way while she washed her hands in the half bath on the main floor. She just prayed it was heavy enough to remain in the trap, which was why she was currently on her knees, bent awkwardly as she tried to gain momentum with the wrench. God only knew when it was last loosened! She had been here for ten years, so sometime before that.

Her last handyman, a term she used loosely when thinking of Roger, was a downright klutz. He had caused more problems trying to fix things than there had been in the first place. For instance, a door-handle-sized hole in the plaster wall, which was caused by a small child shoving an upstairs door open, turned into the need for an electrician when Roger accidentally cut the electrical cord in the wall. She’d had too many fights with the local city inspector not to get an electrician to fix the problem, which led to the inspector coming again and claiming the entire bed-and-breakfast had to be rewired to get up to code. She’d had to cancel five reservations while the work was completed, so she politely told Roger he could stay on, but she didn’t know when he would be paid. He’d wisely put in his verbal resignation, and she had not seen him since.

So, it made sense, with her luck, that just as she was making progress on loosening the drain trap, the bell on the front desk rang. She’d had run the bed-and-breakfast for a year by herself, no one but her answered phones, checked in guests, did laundry and cleaned the rooms, cooked breakfast, or played handywoman.

Even though she tried to lay the wrench down easily, the heavy metal clanged against the tile and cracked one large square. That’s just freakin’ wonderful! she hissed to herself. The bell rang again, and she fought the urge to grab the damn thing and throw it against the forehead of the person ringing it.

On her way to the front desk, she tried in vain to shift away the strand of hair that kept falling over her left eye. A large shadow fell over the desk. Hello, and welcome to the... She finally looked up. Oh, this day just keeps getting better and better! Sarcasm, her dearest friend.

Grant Harrison flashed that hundred-watt grin at her, and though it had been almost fifteen years since she’d last seen him, her panties dampened and her nipples hardened to the point of cutting glass.

    Hi, Ness.

What are you doing here? Harsh, maybe, but he was the one who left. She often daydreamed about what might have been if her high school sweetheart, her first for everything, hadn’t left to play football at the University of Oklahoma. Never mind that he had begged her to come with him. Missouri was
